Townsville Smart Classrooms Mentor Julianne Cervellin said Christmas Around the World 2007 aimed to improve cultural awareness and acceptance by exposing students to a diverse range of religions, cultures and celebrations through online chats, raps and blogs.

'This is the fifth year of the project and it has proven to be an extremely popular addition and enhancement to Christmas and holiday activities which already take place in many classrooms,' she said.

While the project focuses predominantly on Christmas, it also includes online communication with Buddhists, Muslims, and Hindus, and traditions which they follow between November and January.

'This allows our Queensland students to be involved in true cultural and religious diversity and provides them with opportunities to explore and accept other cultures and religious traditions by online interaction with a wide range of guests.'

This year, guests will be chatting from Antarctica, Germany, Ireland, Soloman Islands, Malaysia, Tunisia, Croatia, England, New Zealand, Indonesia, France and the United States of America.

Highlights will include music and movie raps with a Christmas theme and the Our Collaborative Christmas Craft blog where students can share information and tips on activities such as card making and Christmas cooking.

Raps and blogs are running from Week Four onwards while online chats will run from 26-28 November and 3-5 December.
