• Baillie, Allan; Culic, Ned (illus) 1997, The excuse, (Aussie bites series), Puffin books, 61 p.
  When Pete arrives at school almost an hour late, the whole class listens with interest to his excuse but even the most naive feel that their gullible Mr. Scarsdale won't believe this tale. The boy gives a long, involved account of how he met an alien, Shilk by name; of their conversation and the latter's need to obtain methane gas to refuel his flying saucer; and Pete's experiences aboard the spaceship. Readers will delight in the bizarre conclusion to the book. Cartoon-style, charcoal illustrations varying in size and shape throughout, add verve and humour to a good fun tale.

• Ball, Duncan; Smith, Craig (illus) 1997, Emily Eyefinger and the lost treasure, Angus & Robertson, Pymble, N.S.W, 82 p.
  As always, Emily's singular third eye in the tip of her finger helps her overcome seemingly insurmountable difficulties. This time, she writes a poem, solves a mystery involving a successful portrait painter, untangles a faulty parachute in mid-air and finds the exit from the tomb of King Inverticheops after a cave-in, to mention just a few of her escapades. Needless to say, a total suspension of disbelief is necessary in following Emily's activities. Written in an easy reading style, the six stories move at a spanking pace. They provide rewarding reading for newly established readers. Craig Smith's zany illustrations capture the essence of the stories in this third book of the series.

• Brallier, Jess M; Parker, Robert Andrew (illus) 2002, Who was Albert Einstein?, (Who was? series), Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 105 p.
  This engaging non-fiction narrative tells the story of Einstein's life, including his forays into politics and public speaking, and his family life. The introduction is an effective hook disclosing intriguing paradoxes in the scientist's life such as the fact that, as a child, one of the world's most brilliant people was 'a poor student kicked out of school'.
  While there are numerous text boxes outlining some of Einstein's theories, the book explores the man more than his science. The text avoids highly specialised vocabulary providing, where necessary, succinct explanations of concepts with which young readers may be unfamiliar including patents and 'having a paper published'. Black and white sketches provide ample illustrations to support the text and parallel timelines show the scientist's life against world events. This North American series has an American focus which gives rise to some interesting expressions such as the reference to television as a 'boob tube'.

• Carmody, Isobelle 2005, The legend of Little Fur, (Little Fur series), Penguin/Viking, Camberwell, Vic, 194 p.
  Little Fur, an elf troll, is dedicated to protecting seven ancient trees through which the 'earth magic' flows. Many astute comments about humans' desire to control everything and consequently the damage they do to the natural environment could be a catalyst for discussion of human-environment relationships in Studies of Society and Environment.
  In the first of the Little Fur series, readers are introduced to the protagonist and her strong connection to the 'earth magic'. The remaining wilderness region of a human city, in which the seven trees stand, is threatened by fires lit by arsonists, referred to here as 'tree burners'. Descriptions of man-made things from the perspective of animals could be useful for introducing primary students to the concept of alternate readings of texts. Wisdoms such as, 'Death is part of the flow of life'; require a level of maturity beyond that suggested by the large print and black and white illustrations. The lyrical text, endearing characters and thought provoking issues make this appropriate for class reading.

• Brasch, Nicolas 2003, Tan Le, (Our voices series), Rigby Heinemann, Port Melbourne, 44 p.
  Developed in collaboration with the National Museum of Australia. This simple text highlights a Young Australian of the Year's contribution to Australian community. Tan Le's story provides some background to the Vietnam War, describes the risky process of fleeing Vietnam and gives first impressions of life in Australia.
  As a part of the National Museum of Australia's Our Voices series this book has been purpose written to provide a migrant's in-depth perspective for a unit called 'New Arrivals: The Peopling of Australia'. Tan Le's story is told simply and brought to life by the inclusion of her personal comments. Outlined boxes contain explanations of concepts important to the understanding of the text. These and the photographs displayed in the middle pages of the book help break the text. The easy-to-read language, logically organised presentation and short length are appropriate for the middle primary audience for whom it has been designed. This book provides students with valuable insight into the experiences of refugees and their contributions to Australia.

• Clark, Sherryl 2001, Batter up!, (Aussie bites series), Puffin, Ringwood, Vic, 78 p.
  Haley has returned from the school holidays to find her best friend, Spit, has become her worst enemy. Haley is shocked to discover a rumour has destroyed her friendship with Spit. Spit has been accused of stealing Mr Loader's pens and he wrongfully labels Haley as the dobber.
  The story traces Haley's attempts to save her doomed friendship. The text flows at a steady pace and is strung together by Haley's list of peace offerings. Elements of humour revolve around Mr Loader, stereotyped as a grumpy unapproachable teacher, who co-ordinates the selection process for the school softball team - at Haley's school, being in the first team was a 'Big deal.' At the final selection match, an accident unveils the true culprit of the crime and Haley's and Spit's friendship is saved. This text could be used for discussions and role-play centred on friendships and teacher-student relationships.

• Dahl, Roald 1981, Charlie and the chocolate factory, Penguin, Harmondsworth, 134p.
  Impoverished Charlie Bucket's fortune changes dramatically when he finds a gold ticket inside his chocolate bar inviting him to a tour of the mysterious and fantastical Willy Wonker's chocolate factory. Wonker has opened his factory for the first time ever with the undisclosed intention of selecting his successor.
  The enchanting classic will engage young readers with its wonderful inventive array of confectionary-making machines. They will wonder at the genius of the enigmatic Willy Wonker, inwardly cheer as the four other children on the tour bring about their own sticky demise and share the humble Charlie's joy at being chosen to carry on the Wonker tradition. The Oompa-Loompas sing a moral message as each of the wrongdoers are expelled through their own greed and selfishness. Many children will be familiar with the film version of the classic story. Read aloud to young students or independently by older ones Dahl's classic evokes all of the magic imagery that can be captured on film and more.

• D'Ath, Justin 2005, Bushfire rescue, (Extreme adventures series), Puffin, Camberwell, Vic, 123 p.
  Young Sam's adventures make The man from Snowy River look like a scenic Sunday drive. The action-packed but impossible plot has Sam pitted against cattle rustlers, a raging bushfire and a crazed rodeo bull. This would make a great read-aloud. Students could compare the techniques D'Ath uses for creating suspense to those used in action movies. Sam is visiting his grandparents in mountain country when faced with every conceivable challenge, including finding himself attached to a helicopter's water scoop suspended over the fire. Fans of action movies will have no difficulty visualising the action and could select one of the many thrilling scenes to create a story board, or video interpretation. They could consider how suspense is developed in the book and how they might achieve similar results in a multimodal format. This is an accessible text that should tempt reluctant male readers.

• Denton, Terry 2007, Wombat & Fox : summer in the city, (Wombat & Fox series), Allen & Unwin, Crows Nest, N.S.W, 122 p.
  When Wombat and Fox head to the seaside for a holiday, initially it is Wombat who is hurrying Fox along. Almost slap-stick humour abounds in each of three self-contained chapters that could provide material for dramatisation or story-board activities.
  Wombat, Fox, Croc and an assortment of animal collectives - five monkeys, twenty penguins and two hippo sisters - have distinctive character traits that guarantee madcap relationships. The busy text is presented in chunks on the page and heavily illustrated with Denton's hallmark sketches. Various font sizes also add emphasis to this entertaining text.

• Donkin, Andrew 2001, Crime busters, (Dorling Kindersley readers series), Dorling Kindersley, London:, 48 p.
  The seven real life crime stories told here are used to illustrate how aspects of criminal investigation and forensic science have evolved through history. This informative book has been designed as a reader but may have applications in Studies of Society and Environment or Science.
  This makes fascinating reading for the proficient reader while familiarising them with features of a non- fiction text such as contents page, index, glossary and captions. Margins are filled with snippets of additional information that show how the investigative techniques from the past have acted as precursors to contemporary crime solving. They also provide interesting background information that help to give context to these stories. The narrative tone, accessible language, variety of illustration and photographic material should make this attractive to students who enjoy an element of intrigue.

• Fienberg, Anna; Fienberg, Barbara; Gamble, Kim (illus) 1998, Tashi and the Baba Yaga, Allen & Unwin, St Leonards, N.S.W, 64 p.
  Here the Fienbergs have produced another sure-fire winner for established readers, with simple text, imaginatively extended through spirited illustrations. Jack's retelling of Tashi's tales diverts Dad from the misery of a heavy cold and causes Mum to forget the washing until this version of the old Russian folktale of the evil Baba Yaga is told.
  Delivered as Tashi's first-hand experience which gives it an exciting immediacy, and aided by Kim Gamble's expressive pencil, the story of the old witch and her weird flying house with the chicken legs take on a vivid reality. The Tashi series features inventive stories of adventure, full of lively imagery and fast action. Each title is an ideal motivator for transitional readers to practise their newly established skills.

• Flynn, Pat; Jellett, Tom (illus) 2006, The tuckshop kid, UQP, St. Lucia, Qld, 81 p.
  Matt is the 'tuckshop kid' because his mother's too busy to prepare meals and his body is suffering the effects of his unhealthy lifestyle. When he has a diabetes scare he and his mother make positive changes in their lives that are self-empowering. The treatment is light and accessible making this a useful text for discussing serious issues of self-esteem and obesity.
  Matt's mother has compensated for the lack of time she spends with her son by giving him money for gadgets and food. Matt's size makes him the brunt of cruel jokes and those who are friendly towards him seem to like him for his money. A lucky streak that sees him winning a free carton of chocolate milk for every one he drinks gives a boost to Matt's popularity. The ways the relationships develop in this well-intentioned story are not entirely convincing. The word plays in the menus that open each chapter are an amusing adjunct.

• Fourmile, Trevor; Fourmile, Lillian (illus) 2004, How the cassowary got its helmet, Black Ink Press, Thuringowa, Qld, 30 p.
  The cassowary is ashamed of its useless wings and hates being ridiculed by other animals. It hides away from the others to avoid being picked on until a friendly seahawk shows the cassowary that he has skills that are valuable. When the Cassowary uses his natural talents to save the animals from the invading snakes, he is held in great regard by the other animals.
  The story is one made up rather than handed down, but the illustrations and the book design place it in an Aboriginal context alongside some of the traditional Indigenous picture books. The story offers an interesting way to approach topics like bullying and discrimination with young people. Based on Dreaming stories from North Queensland.

• Fusillo, Archimede 2003, Uncorked!, (Quick reads series), Word Weavers, Bulimba, Qld, 66 p.
  A message in a bottle found washed up on the beach seems like the perfect subject for a class show-and-tell - until the class bully confiscates it. Read aloud, this could provide an entertaining class read that will facilitate discussion about bullying as well as stimulating creative responses.
  The bullying theme is effectively set against the mystery of discovering the bottle's origin. Many students will relate to the scenario. The incidental inclusion of characters whose names reflect the multicultural mix found in many classrooms is refreshing. Manageable chapter lengths, large print, accessible vocabulary and a variety of themes that students can engage with make the Quick reads series appealing to newly independent chapter book readers. Colourful covers suggest intrigue and black and white illustrations intersperse the text. A brief author and illustrator profile conclude each book.

• Galbraith, Ben 2006, The three fishing brothers Gruff, Hodder Children's, London, 32 p.
  Three mean, ugly and irresponsible brothers ignore environmental and social responsibility with disastrous consequences. Drawing upon the traditional fairy tales of The three little pigs and The three billy goats gruff, Galbraith has successfully produced a twisted fairy tale with a clear ecological message.
  Anglo Gruff has a small dinghy and catches undersized sea creatures. Anvil Gruff has a medium sized trawler, while his brother Angora owns a huge fishing vessel. Both of these men use inappropriate and dangerous fishing methods. When they have completely stripped Poverty Bay of all the fish, they move to the Bay of Plenty. There they encounter Minke Whale, guardian of the ocean, but their huge machinery injures the whale. When the Gruffs have eventually turned this bay into sludge, devoid of fish and birds, the townsfolk seek revenge. Aided by the now recovered Minke, each of the Gruff brothers meets his demise. Galbraith's intricate illustrations are not only clever and attractive, but also incorporate environmental advice. His use of collage and cut-outs stunningly supports a story of wit, accountability and morality.(Level : Years 1-7)
• Gervay, Susanne; Wilcox, Cathy 2000, I am Jack, Angus&Roberston, Sydney, 126 p.
  This is a perceptive and poignant story that offers a very personal insight into one boy's experience of being bullied. Accessible and engaging, this story could be used as a very effective vehicle to explore values and attitudes towards interpersonal behaviours, and the complex dynamics involved in bullying.
  Told in the first person, this book sensitively reveals the insidious way taunting and name calling can lead to the collective victimisation, depersonalisation and isolation of an individual. It engenders in the reader empathy for Jack, compassion for the bully, and a heightened awareness of the responsibility everyone in the school community has in eradicating bullying and promoting social justice and equity. The quirky pencil-drawn illustrations help convey many of the emotions yet simultaneously counterbalance the weighty subject matter.

• Giblin, James Cross; Ibatoulline, Bagram (illus) 2004, Secrets of the Sphinx, Scholastic, New York, 47 p.
  In this fascinating title, Giblin presents research and speculation about famous Egyptian artefacts and monuments including the pyramids, the Rosetta Stone and in particular, the great sphinx. Beautiful, clear illustrations accompany the fairly dense text.
  True to Giblin's writing style, this book is written as a narrative non-fiction. He uses fictional techniques to shape the well-researched, factual material in a lively and engaging way. Giblin details the history of the Sphinx including theories about who built it and the Ancient Egyptian cultural and religious context in which it was built. Issues of restoration and preservation are also explored, given the modern-day effects of air pollution, tourism and archaeological excavations. While the text is fairly complex, photo-realistic gouache and watercolour illustrations help to engage readers. A map at the front of the book highlights important sites and a simple timeline is also included. Source notes and a bibliography appear at the back of the book to aid readers in further research.

• Hall, Penny; Smith, Craig 2002, Alan the alien, (Tadpoles series), Koala, Mascot, N.S.W, 64 p.
  Clark is disgruntled when his exchange student from the country ('Alan Aylian') is not only weird looking but claims to come from another planet. The audience is in on the joke long before Clark, who only accepts Alan for what he is when he helps Clark defeat the school bully.
  Clark's initial reactions are entertaining and Alan is an oddly endearing alien. Alan's holiday on earth is fun - and Alan is very keen on having fun. The theme of bullying is well managed and the open-ended conclusion invites a sequel. This is a worthwhile book for newly independent readers. Craig Smith's illustrations are as much fun as Alan's adventures.

• Hann Syme, Marguerite 1997, Chickpea, Scholastic, Sydney, 55 p.
  Chickpea is no ordinary hen, as her cover portrait shows. She is first and foremost, ten-year-old Hooman's beloved pet. His whole world revolves around her. Even more importantly she becomes the catalyst in establishing lonely Iranian widower, Afshin and his children, Hooman and Mina in their Australian community.
  Although classified only as an animal story in this extensive series, Chickpea offers far more. Told with empathy and skill, it is also a story of securing family relationships. The clash of cultural expectations between parents and children when coming to terms with settling in a new land is an element in this process. The central characters, all clearly drawn, grow in knowledge of self and of one another as this engaging story progresses. This book was shortlisted for the 1998 Children's Book Council of Australia Children's Book of the Year Awards: Younger Readers.

• Hawke, Rosanne; Pignataro, Anna (illus) 2004, The collector, (Start-ups series), Lothian, South Melbourne, 64 p.
  A satisfying mystery that will do well as a read aloud. This popular author and illustrator are able to make a very special story out of the everyday.
  When the neighbour's racing pigeons start disappearing Luke's cat is blamed. With his sister Breanna, Luke has only three days to find the culprit. Pencil sketches reflect the warm nature of this fiction and the rapport between Luke and the cat, Q. The text level is ideal for this age group.

• Heimann, Rolf 2002, Hamlet and Piglet, (Start-ups series), Lothian, South Melbourne, 63 p.
  Piglet is a delightful and practical down-to-earth moggie from Wangaratta,with a wonderful sense of fun. But life changes dramatically for Piglet when he moves to the city to live in a theatre, meets a ghost and becomes involved in solving a fifty year old mystery.
  The Theatre Astoria owners are hoping that Piglet will be able to get rid of the annoying ghost who lives in the theatre. Piglet's first encounter with the ghost, Hamlet, is terrifying. After explaining to Piglet the events surrounding his untimely death he then issues a warning of caution that the same fate may befall Piglet. Initially scared by Hamlet's prophecy Piglet's reservations start to diminish as the glamour and fame of life on the stage take hold. This small chapter book with some challenging vocabulary will whet the appetites of newly independent readers. The text is supported by simple black and white cartoon drawings. There are some humorous references in the text, which younger readers may have difficulty relating to.

• Heinrich, Sally 2007, The most beautiful lantern, Hachette Livre Australia, Sydney, 32 p.
  This stunning picture book successfully blends a modern day story of a little girl trying to find the most beautiful lantern to carry to the Mid-Autumn Festival, with Chinese history, legend, culture, superstition and folklore. It would stand alone as a pleasant read for a child, but also lends itself to a read aloud narrative. Its application to a unit on celebrations is apparent.
  Mei-Ling is excited about the coming Mid-Autumn Festival, but it won't be perfect unless she has the best lantern to carry. In her search of the markets and in her night-time musings, she considers a wide variety of options. These are spectacularly displayed intermittently throughout the book on double page spreads. Talking through her ideas with her grandfather, Mei-Ling gets much more than the opinion she sought. Grandfather's wisdom and knowledge is diplomatically imparted. Mei-Ling learns about the significance of moon cakes and their importance in Chinese history. She hears the legend of Hou Yi and Chang-O and the tale of the jade rabbit, the fox and the monkey. Finally, she is captivated by the story of her grandparents' marriage and opts for following family tradition. This heart warming tale, imaginatively illustrated, will delight all who read and view it.

• Hilton, Nette; Stewart, Chantal 2006, Star of the show, UQP, St Lucia, Qld, 98 p.
  Aimee and Serena are vying to be the most beautiful angel in the class Christmas concert. However, Serena's derogatory remarks about Aimee's home-made costume lead Aimee to take on a new role that proves to be a winner. Could be used to stimulate discussion about bullying and discovering personal strengths.
  Aimee's resourceful parents try hard to help their daughter feel she is as good an angel as the others. Hilton does not trivialise a situation that many children will recognise as one that adults will often dismiss. Appealing black and white illustrations help to break the relatively dense text that could challenge many transitional readers. Competent young readers will find this a rewarding read while others will enjoy sharing this as a read-aloud.

• Hirst, Robin & Sally; Harvey, Roland (illus); with Levine, Joseph 1988, My place in space, Five Mile, Fitzroy, Vic, 31 p.
  A condescending bus collector is promptly put in his place, when he challenges Henry Wilson and sister Rosie, as to where 'home' is. Henry eloquently astounds all with his knowledge of planets, stars, light speed, in fact the universe. Double impact illustrations blend spectacular airbrush depictions of space, with amusing but subtle character drawings of the madcap 'goings-on' on earth. A multi-faceted book with appeal for all ages, it particularly lends itself to Science topics.(Level : Years 4-5)
• Hoopmann, Kathy; Axelsen, Stephen (illus) 2002, Race of fear, (Quick reads series), Word Weavers, Bulimba, Qld, 68 p.
  Two boys who have stumbled across a film shoot mistakenly believe they have witnessed a murder and are in danger. The ensuing chase has them face a series of challenges that defies credibility but offers an adrenaline drenched read for students who enjoy a thriller.
  Set in a dense forest the tension builds to a crescendo as the boys survive a snake, leeches, wasp attack and a plunge over a waterfall. The older brother has the added burden of responsibility for his younger brother. The dialogue between them is expressive and the fast-paced text replete with vivid description to stimulate the senses.Manageable chapter lengths, large print, accessible vocabulary and a variety of themes that students can engage with make this series appealing to newly independent chapter book readers. Colourful covers suggest intrigue and black and white illustrations intersperse the easy-to-read text. A brief author and illustrator profile conclude each book.

• Kelly, Ned; Wilkinson, Carole (ed); Jones, Dean (illus) 2007, Ned Kelly's Jerilderie letter, (True tales series), Black Dog, Fitzroy, Vic, 57 p.
  Carole Wilkinson brings history to life with her edited version of the famous Jerilderie letter. Supporting the letter with a map, a brief background to the writing of the letter and a list of characters, she sets the scene for a real-life adventure story. This book would make a great read-aloud tale, an absorbing personal read, or a document for historical study.
  Autobiographical in content, the letter itself is Ned Kelly's version of his out-law days - his attempt to show that there are always two sides to every story. In February 1879, while waiting to rob the Jerilderie bank, Ned Kelly dictated this long letter to Joe Byrne. He was passionate about relating his side of the story and his turn of phrase and detail reveal his deep-seated sense of injustice. The original document, written in tense circumstances, was rambling and chronologically out of sequence. Joe was a neat writer but poor at spelling and grammar. Wilkinson admits that she has corrected the errors in an attempt to make this story accessible and comprehensible, and she has achieved this admirably. Dean Jones' illustrations graphically depict the scenes, and his recurring symbolism of the original document, complete with cut-out section to resemble Ned's armour, cleverly support the text. An included glossary assists with Australian terminology. This adaptation of the original Jerilderie letter will be a valuable asset to any library.

• King-Smith, Dick; Barton, Jil 2000, Lady Lollipop, Walker, London, 120 p.
  Not only does the petulant Princess Penelope demand a pig for her eighth birthday she insists on it becoming a palace pet. An orphan boy is able to train both pig and princess and alleviate tensions in the royal family earning himself and the pig a title. It will be glaringly obvious to even early primary students that it is the King and Queen's inability to say 'no' to their precious daughter that has made her unpleasant and almost impossible to live with.
  The King becomes torn between his daughter's unreasonable request and his wife's ultimatum that if the pig moves in she will move out. Johnny Skinner's talents as a pig trainer prove effective in dealing with the royals who each develop an affinity with the pig. Students will delight in the antics involved in training a pig to do its 'busy' in the Queen's prize winning rose garden. The black and white illustrations beautifully capture the mood swings of all involved. The large font adds to the accessibility of this lively text that also lends itself to an expressive shared reading in younger classes. This may lead to discussion on pet training and/or co-operative and considerate behaviours.

• Lester, Alison; Harvey, Roland (illus) 2007, The shadow brumby, (Bonnie & Sam Horse-crazy! series), Allen & Unwin, Crows Nest, N.S.W, 62 p.
  Bonnie and Sam discover that Drover, the police horse, has a twin - a wild brumby. Young horse lovers will relish in the shared secret that the horses have swapped lives. An element of adventure is introduced.
  Much to Sam's disappointment, the original Drover is one horse that doesn't respond to their attentions. They are surprised when the horse's personality changes overnight and soon deduce what has happened. One rather magical chapter, in which the wild brumbies ride by Sam's paddock and the mares swap places, leaves readers in no doubt as to what has happened. The clunky shift between the initial chapters may confuse transitional readers. Never-the-less, they will be engaged by the delightful relationships between animals and humans, young friends, and a child and her father. Harvey's lively colour illustrations are an added bonus.

  This narrative, in the fairy tale tradition, reflects the grey European winter where two orphans are stoic in the face of poverty. Students will be fascinated with the lyrical portrayal of poverty and resilience.
  This picture book for older readers is a satisfying read which could also be used to encourage students to write personal reflections. The exquisite narrative could be used to compile comparative lists between the kinds of activities other children might be engaged in (they might 'pick fruit in the hedges or build dens in the hillsides'), and burdensome chores the orphans are forced to carry out for the farmer who has taken them in. A red bird leads them to Sunnymead where their lives are transformed by colour and warmth. The art work reflects the changing tone of the text.

Edward's grandfather, a past winner of this prestigious race, believes Edward should nominate for the race as he has the potential to do extremely well. In consultation with the family, Edward agrees and begins a gruelling training schedule. Swimming, exercising, eating a healthy diet and going to school leave little time for Edward to play with his friends. But his commitment never wavers. When the big day arrives, Edward is excited to see all his friends who have come to cheer for him. As he dives into the fast flowing Zamboola River, Edward concentrates on swimming his very best. But just when he thinks he has a chance to win the race he feels someone grab his foot and pull him back. Edward is devastated. Who could possibly want to destroy his chance at winning the race? This is a wonderful novel to read aloud to a class. Use for discussions on competition, fairness and cheating.

  Growing up is never easy, no matter what your race or home environment. This story is compiled from anecdotes of his childhood and of his extended family as related directly to the reader by Boori Pryor. The sustaining thread is his love for his pet girragundji (green-tree frog), who helps him confront his fears of the dreaded, night-stalking Hairyman, and even the school bully.
  Boori's girragundji is also the means of his overcoming his bed-wetting problem as it gives him the courage to go out to the gulmra (the toilet) in the night. These difficulties overcome, he manages to respond to the smiles of 'this migaloo jalbu, Sharyn', and later to approach Jody Butler. The voice of the young teenage boy rings true, especially when boasting of his football prowess. He recalls finding peace with his little frog in an often turbulent household and also recounts the homespun wisdom of the advice his parents offer. The joy of fishing expeditions 'down the Bohle' places the story in North Queensland. The print is set in a variety of fonts against backgrounds that are sometimes black and sometimes white. Small black-and-white photographs and a frog motif illustrate the text.

  This picture book contains practical advice on recognising dogs' moods and responding appropriately. Designed to be read aloud, this is an invaluable resource for raising awareness of the dangers of approaching strange dogs.
  'Can I pat that dog?' is asked on the left side of each double page spread. The immediate response is short and explicit and can be easily assimilated by young children. The opposite page provides a more comprehensive explanation of the 'dog signs' that show a dog's mood. The text speaks directly to young children and is accompanied by a series of illustrations that provide effective visual reinforcement. It warns of the possible dangers of patting a dog that is angry, frightened, working, on guard, sleeping, eating or old. The book also explains the appropriate way to pat a dog and to respond to a dog's approaches. Although aimed at younger children the information is applicable to older age groups. An excellent resource to support a theme on pets.

  A message written on a banana is a creative idea which immediately captures the imagination.Brocky's Bananagram is a well-written easy-to-read and entertaining story set in Queensland. It addresses issues involved with family life and friendship as well as of the issues of bullying, multiculturalism and prejudice. It develops a story which illustrates how good can triumph over bad and that success can be achieved through effort, perseverance and cooperation. Reluctant readers will appreciate the short chapters. Examples of letter writing throughout the story could be useful for exploring this genre. The whole concept of the book could be a useful base for the development of creative writing.

• Metzenthen, David 2006, The really really epic mini-bike ride, Penguin, Camberwell, Vic, 98 p.
  Two boys from the 'wrong side of the tracks' convince Old Jack to build motorised mini-bikes out of goods scavenged from the local kerbside rubbish collection. Themes of family, invention and active recreation are reflected in this entertaining, light adventure.
  Although Shiny and Pod's motivation is really the desire to re-enact the cult movie Easy Rider, they convince Old Jack to help them in their project. They do this by saying they intend to ride the bikes to the end of the old railway tracks to commemorate the memory of his wife (Shiny's grandmother). Observations of the contrasts between the boys' suburb and nearby wealthy neighbourhoods 'where cats wear collars and the dogs are either Oodles, Spoodles or Labranoodles', are entertaining, as is Old Jack's vernacular. The Aussie Chomps series provides easy-to-read material of manageable length that will appeal to independent younger readers as well as reluctant older readers.

  Non-stop action, suspense and a touch of gore make this a book that is hard to put down. A crocodile in his favourite fishing spot means that Jack's plans for his holidays are set awry. Adding a crocodile hunter to the mix ensures that boys in particular will be hooked. A great read-aloud for middle primary classes.
  Jack has returned from boarding school for the holidays, to his family's property in Queensland's Gulf country. It is testament to Moloney's skills that he is able to portray an authentic setting and convincing characters without ever slackening the pace of the action. The Aussie Chomps series provides easy-to-read material of manageable length that will appeal to independent younger readers as well as reluctant older readers.

  This futuristic science-fiction novel features an organisation of rebel children who have developed ingenious underground systems, which include modified dodgem cars for transport. Their edge-of-the-seat confrontations with an assortment of mutant creatures will hook even reluctant readers.
  In a world controlled by the evil Malig Tumora, Ferdinand has garnered children into a revolutionary organisation, the Rats, that operates in the tunnels below the city. Berrin has escaped the dormitories where children are now raised: family relationships such as parents and siblings are not even a memory for these children who were presumably removed at birth. As a recruit Rat, Berrin quickly finds himself entrenched in adrenaline-pumping action. He also learns the history of Malig Tumora's power and the underground organisation that opposes him. The print size, sentence structure and vocabulary are ideally pitched to middle-upper primary readers. A balanced cast of strong female and male characters will ensure this book has wide appeal. Although there are many battles that result in the deaths of friends and foe, the descriptions are never inappropriately bloody.

  This story follows the life cycle of a tiny octopus, Argonauta, from hatchling to reproducing adult. The combination of fact and fiction puts this book in the 'faction' category, making it an ideal resource for research into marine life.
  The story is a fascinating account of how Argonauta builds a parchment-like egg case around her two longest arms to protect her eggs from predators and other element of the sea. The accompanying artwork is both detailed and appealing, with an excellent use of colour. A short poem is featured at the beginning of the book, along with five pages of information and accurate drawings at the end. Argonauta belongs to the Argonauta nodosus species, one of the six currently recognized species of Argonauts, whose parchment-like egg case becomes a Paper Nautilus, prized by beachcombers.

  This anthology of poetry was originally published in 1996 under the title Beetle soup and is otherwise unchanged. This happily balanced selection of well-written poems and stories is designed to appeal to children under ten. The range of poems offsets the all-too-prevalent doggerel verse that is presented as 'poetry' these days.
  Here is an appealing book which offers 'real' poetry in all its moods, from the rollicking to the reflective. Longer narrative poems sit alongside short and pithy ones. There is the miniature expedition of 'The Ant Explorer' by C.J. Dennis, Libby Hathorn's evocative train poem 'There and back' and the desperation of Irene Gough's 'Flies'. Anne Bell makes a plea for 'The little things' and Bill Scott's 'Little Tom Thumb' moves with a rolling gait. The well-crafted stories are made for reading aloud. They range from Robert Wilson's humorous and vividly pictorial 'Thunderstorm' to the whimsical fantasy of 'The Gobblers' which has a conservation theme, and from Jean Chapman's story of nesting birds in 'Mrs Mag' to the fate of 'The happy, sad, happy car' by Lyn Donald. The essence of the stories and poems has been captured perfectly by the very expressive line and watercolour illustrations. The illustration's response to the atmosphere in the writing is delightful. This elegantly produced book is ideal for sharing or for dipping into alone. It would be a useful and rewarding acquisition for any collection for this age group.

  From the moment Marty's dad points out the dog star in the Orion constellation, a touch of magic relieves the challenges of life. The text in this charming chapter book is perfectly suited to transitional readers and beyond.
  Marty's older sister, Clare, feels threatened by Dad's new female friend and is determined to disrupt any budding relationship. Clare is cynical about Marty's claim that there is a dog hiding under her bed, and readers also wonder whether Marty has concocted the story as an escape. Although a relatively simple plot, readers will become engaged with making inferences and predictions about where it will lead.

  Following on the success of popular film, Happy Feet, this book on penguins is amusingly subtitled and will resonate strongly amongst a wide target audience. While targeted at middle and upper primary readers, the language used is accessible for all ages and retains the 'fun' element as a major denominator in the disclosure of facts.
  Compact and vibrantly coloured, this well-constructed resource includes chapters on the penguin's body, unusual features, where different penguins live and a concise account of each of the seventeen species that exist globally. Black and white silhouetted images of each species provide an effective contrast and surprising detail. Each chapter has a fact file listing predators and feeding and breeding routines in fascinating graph-like diagrams that invite close examination and facilitate comparison.

  A quantity of sausages bound for the 'Dog and sausage day' event is identified as a possible target of a heist. Jack, the local policeman's dog, feels compelled to investigate. A lively and humorous read, the vocabulary will challenge newly-established readers.
  This is one of a series of short chapter books in which a Jack Russell terrier undertakes to solve local dog-related mysteries. A cast of dogs of various breeds take on the roles associated with the crime-mystery genre such as the fickle ex-criminal, the over-enthusiastic side-kick and the romantic interest. One of the features is the many wordplays such as 'in-terrier-gate', and 'paw-plexed'. Although the relatively short texts are broken by illustrations, 'nose maps' and 'Jack's facts', the puns pose an added decoding challenge that could disrupt the flow of the story for young readers. Others will enjoy the humour. All puns are explained in the glossary provided at the end of each chapter.

• Oliver, Narelle 1999, Sand swimmers: the secret life of Australia's dead heart, Lothian, Port Melbourne, Vic, 31 p.
  In this exceptionally handsome book, Oliver has taken Sturt's concept of an inland sea as a sustained metaphor in describing the desert terrain and its numerous inhabitants.
  In sparkling text and brilliant linocut illustration, Oliver draws attention to the movement of animals and to the landforms reminiscent of the seabed. She shows that the territory which Sturt, and many people since, have regarded as 'dead', is in fact teeming with life. She draws subtle comparisons with the ability of the Aborigines to adapt to the desert and to find food in a landscape which Sturt perceived as utterly barren (pp. 8, 9, 28). She shows how the desert animals cope with the intense heat, aridity and harsh vegetation and how changes have taken place over aeons of time.
  This very informative book is well organised. It examines the salt lakes, mulga scrub, life underground, gibber plains, sandhills, Spinifex, clay pans and the nocturnal activities of the desert dwellers. Sturt's expeditions run parallel across the foot of the page, with a map and quotations from his journals. The main illustrations, with their burning blue skies and red ochre landscapes show the life forms specific to each area with an inset key to the camouflaged animals. The index to the animals and a bibliography are included.

• Orr, Wendy; Millard, Kerry 2007, Nim at sea, Allen & Unwin, St. Leonards, N.S.W, 173 p.
  Adventure writer, Alex Rover, came into the lives of Nim and her father in Nim's island. Here, the happy group is set asunder when Alex leaves the remote island after a misunderstanding. Closely-missed communications become the order of the day as they try to find each other again. This warm, humorous, and uplifting adventure about friendship, respecting nature and the importance of communication makes a delightful read-aloud.
  The first paragraph is a wonderful hook, and sets the tone of this book - a quirky adventure, largely set at sea. The literary quality is enhanced by subtle intertextual references (it's been thousands of years since anyone has attempted the being-swallowed-by-a-whale experiment). Nim is accompanied by Selkie (a sea lion) and Fred (a marine iguana with a sneezing problem) as she finds herself in a wonderful array of settings - the desert island, a luxury cruise ship and New York city. These are all described with analogies from Nim's perspective. For example the steam rising from the New York sidewalk reminds her of 'when Fire Mountain gets angry'. Readers will find themselves compelling Nim, Alex and Jack to pick up the clues that will reveal just how closely they are travelling. Emails constantly miss the mark, as does a message in a bottle. Millard's illustrations are appropriately whimsical.

  Banjo Paterson's classic is simply and effectively presented here. This attractive resource could be used in a study of Australian poetry or to embellish a range of Studies of Society and Environment units (e.g. Australian changes and continuities).
  The breakdown of this piece into beautifully illustrated passages will enable even lower primary children (given adequate support) to make sense of the language and visualise the story line. Older students may gain an appreciation for poetry not so easily achieved with a text-only reading. After initial familiarisation students will enjoy revisiting this book to pore over the artwork or perhaps test their recital skills. The clarity, simplicity and size of the watercolours that support the text make it ideal for sharing with a whole class. Discussion and activities may arise from comparisons of city and rural life, identifying some the locations mentioned on a map, noting changes in society over time (particularly as indicated in the artwork), vocabulary extension activities, a dramatisation of the story, or further research into Paterson or other Australian poets. The book's value is further enhanced by the inclusion of biographical paragraph on Paterson's life, an explanation of droving and a glossary.

  This excellent resource follows two primary students through the process of planning, researching and presenting a project on rice in nine Asian countries. 'What can you say about rice? It's small and white and tastes of whatever you put it with', laments Tom as he and his partner Emma contemplate a project on the topic. They discover that there is much to be said about rice through interviews with people in their multicultural community, email, books and the Internet.
  The 'project' grows to contain recipes, information about how rice is grown, folk tales, and other interesting facts about how rice is used in each country. Each double page spread focuses on one country and is presented as a brightly-coloured chart that real students in real classroom might have produced. Indeed this format could be used as an exemplar upon which other inquiry based projects could be based. Information, written in a conversational tone, is arranged in blocks of text and enhanced with drawings and photographs. The students describe where their information comes from in the project diary on each page.

  Jessie, a fairy believer, can access the Fairy Realm from the Blue Moon garden in her grandmother's backyard. This lyrical and magical adventure makes a wonderful alternative to Enid Blyton for independent readers.
  Her mother and teacher worry about Jessie's 'overactive' imagination but her grandmother knows the truth.A sticky-beak neighbour takes advantage of the grandmother's absence and brings a young girl, Tasha, to the garden in the hope of accessing its secrets. Tasha becomes lost and Jessie has to convince the frosty magician from the Realm, Avron, to allow her to use the Rainbow Wand to find the child before intervention from the human world threatens the sanctity of the garden. Rodda's skill as a fantasy writer is evident and, while there is a large volume of text here, it is appropriately pitched to a young audience. Full page, black and white illustrations at the beginning of each chapter beautifully reflect the magic realism genre.

  The book contains raps on subjects as varied as breakfast, school, the Toomelah bus, brushing teeth and families. The raps teach about hygiene and promote positive family relationships. The verse is printed in coloured typeface against backgrounds such as graffiti-ed walls and strips of colour, which may present some visual discrimination problems for some students. Cartoon-like figures illustrate the action and photographs show children rapping.
  The production of this attractive series, Indij Readers for Little Fullas, for Big Fullas, was supported by Community Elders in NSW. While the readers are specifically aimed at promoting literacy skills among Aboriginal students, they will appeal to children of all cultures and communities. The stories and accounts have been written by Indigenous people and are culturally appropriate. They present positive images of Aboriginal society and culture. The tales are lively, often amusing and reflective of real world issues. Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island artists, from diverse backgrounds and cultures, illustrate the stories. A variety of genres are used.

  This graphic novel gives some insight into the mysteries of the pyramids in Ancient Egypt. The engaging storyline, accessible format and seven pages of glossary provide plenty of material to support Studies of Society and Environment. Methen, son of a priest, narrates the story with the balance told through the dialogue. When servant girl Madja implores Methen to save her from an arranged marriage to the chief embalmer, Kenamun, the two thirteen-year-olds find themselves embroiled in an adventure with pyramid thieves. The cartoon format is kept large and relatively uncluttered. Text is kept to a minimum. A map and timeline are also included.

  Three boys are thrilled when their politeness pays off and they are singled out for special attention by their wrestling heroes. Front row tickets to Wrestlefest and a backstage meeting with the showmen fulfil their dreams and make them the envy of the school bully. When Wrestlefest hits Mount Everleigh the boys become obsessed with obtaining tickets while the girls rubbish the sport. Even Tom and Harry's parents succumb to the stereotypes. In a delightful twist Tom, who tells the story, describes he and his brother practising manoeuvres with their wrestling dolls. Both author and illustrator have fun with the exaggerated characters that wresting is famous for. The description of these great hulks drinking from teacups between fights provides just some of the entertainment. Illustrations are, appropriately, energetic cartoons full of 'biff'.
  Manageable chapter lengths, large print, accessible vocabulary and a variety of themes that students can engage with make this series appealing to newly independent chapter book readers. Colourful covers suggest intrigue and black and white illustrations intersperse the easy-to-read text. A brief author and illustrator profile conclude each book.

• Starke, Ruth 2000, NIPS XI, (Takeaways series), Lothian, Port Melbourne, 224 p.
  Lan's response to the annual Multicultural Day school concert is less than enthusiastic. He is sick of being made to feel different from Australian boys by parading in national costume, and dreams up a wonderful idea of forming a cricket team with ethnic players. In a gesture of defiance, the boys call themselves 'The Nips'.
  The author never puts a foot wrong in this delightful and wildly funny story. Lan's blithe ignorance of the difficulties involved in playing a rookies' eleven against the famous King's College is humorously depicted, while,for the team, their parents and their ex-Test Cricketer coach, the beneficial outcomes of training for this ultimate 'skippy' game are touchingly described. While the racism, overt and covert, in the community, and the cultural barriers faced by the boys' families are never glossed over, the touch is light and the outlook hopeful.

  This illustrated poem delivers a dramatic explanation of the machinations of a young child's mind. Fascinating names and invented language are reminiscent of Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky. This will challenge students' strategies for making meaning of texts and raise discussion about varied interpretations.
  The child invites the reader to 'Come with me, in my head, to see how it goes' revealing a mind driven by a rich cast of characters who are apparently responsible for directing moods. The initial tantrum, courtesy of the 'noise-a-matron', is soon put to a stop by the 'dullundrears' (parents). A change in mood is reflected in the text presentation. Text boxes become ribbons that flow across the page heralding a new, fun frame of mind rich in the imagery of the circus. The characters take on names that aptly reflect their antics. The elaborate artwork also invites revisits, with intricately designed contraptions and theatrical characters testimony to the illustrator's fertile imagination.

  Superbly detailed illustrations portray the ecosystem built around leaf litter, emphasising its importance to the planet's survival as it preserves moisture, helps to conserve the soil, and provides shelter and nutrients for a huge variety of plants and animals. This is a book to be explored and revisited; the author's suggestion to use a magnifying glass is worth heeding.
  The same scene at the base of a tree is reproduced on each double page spread, virtually facilitating a field study of the changes that happen on the forest floor over time. The minute detail is problematic for sharing in large groups. Students could work in small groups to investigate specific pages or elements. They will enjoy watching such things as how minibeasts go about their business aiding the decomposition of dead plants and animals, mice reproducing, or a snake devouring a mouse. A lift-up flap on each page reveals some hidden element of the activity at a deeper level. The text at the bottom of each page is quite dense with six lines of small font describing the process and focussing the reader's attention on specific aspects of the illustration. The final pages contain lists of ten other items that can be found in each spread. The glossary is also comprehensive as are the teacher notes available on the publisher's site.

  While holidaying with her parents Philippa discovers a furry creature and adopts it as her pet. Sharing the secret is fellow camper Greg and together they attempt to understand the needs of the rather uncooperative animal. Children interested in environmental issues and animal stories should enjoy this accessible chapter book.
  The mystery deepens when a local informs the children that they are harbouring a nimbin and only hints at the trouble that it may cause. The few locals who know about these unusual animals choose to keep their existence quiet to protect them from publicity. This superficially raises the issue of keeping animals in zoos and human interference endangering some species. The nimbin is prone to stealing food and Philippa finds herself accepting blame for her pet's shoplifting. Readers will appreciate the conundrum that returning the nimbin to its natural habitat causes her. Vocabulary is accessible and sentence structures are varied to suit proficient readers.

  Author of the Maxx Rumble footy and Maxx Rumble cricket series, Michael Wagner again proves his talent for writing rollicking stories in The Undys books. This story of a single dad and his fun loving son playing active and creative games will appeal particularly to boys, and may encourage reluctant readers to read chapter books.
  Inspired by living in Housing Commission flats during his own childhood, Wagner brings insight and humour to this story. Josh Undy is a young lad describing the entertaining ways he and his father Phil play a variety of games. As a single dad, Phil gives his son the best childhood experiences and is a role model for good sportsmanship and loving family relationships. The invented games are funny and may encourage the readers to try them at home or make up their own versions. The activity and energy of each game may also persuade children to leave sedentary pursuits and become involved in healthier alternatives. At the end of each chapter there is a reward in the form of a puzzle or game, motivating the reader to continue reading for more rewards. Some toilet humour and language is used, but this will add to the appeal for many boys.
