• Allen, Pamela 1993, Alexander's outing, Viking, Ringwood, Vic, 30 p.
  Alexander is a duck who lives with his mother and four brothers and sisters in Sydney Botanical Gardens. The trouble begins when Alexander's mother, feeling bored, decides to take her family for a walk and Alexander, star gazing, comes to grief. It takes the chance action of a small boy to alert all the people to a simple mathematical principle as a means of rescuing Alexander from 'the deep dark hole' into which he has fallen. There is also a theme of cooperation involved.
  The story sparkles with plenty of word play in which, as the illustrations show, Alexander appears to have learned nothing! The ink and watercolour drawings on white backgrounds portray the frantic activity surrounding Alexander's imprisonment and capture the atmosphere of the Gardens and of Hyde Park.

• Allen, Pamela 2003, Grandpa and Thomas, Penguin/Viking, Camberwell, Vic, 28 p.
  In this meticulously plotted story of a beach outing, Allen's beautiful ink and colour wash illustrations are matched by a simple and clever text that reads aloud very well. Grandpa and Thomas's actions are underscored by the 'Swish, swash, swoosh' of the sea as they build sandcastles and paddle. The pair's actions are complementary and their sheer joy in each other's company is engaging. The dynamic illustrations focus on the simple pleasures of a day at the beach. White space is used judiciously so the text stands out clearly. The endpapers, with their squawking seagulls, add to the pleasure of reading this quality picture book.

• Anhlot, Laurence; Gon, Adriano (illus) 2001, I like me, Dorling Kindersley, London, 26 p.
  This colourful child-centred book, with its repetitive text, aims to build self-esteem in young children by exploring their concerns and activities in a positive way. It encourages children to feel comfortable with their physical appearance, to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to be active. The illustrations throughout the book feature humorous cartoons of children in action.

• Argent, Kerry 2005, India the showstopper, Allen & Unwin, Crows Nest, N.S.W, 32 p.
  As a hip-hopping harmonica player, India the elephant was the star of the circus. That was until Oswaldo the Magnificent was brought into teach her new tricks. Young students will enjoy the circus theme and the large expressive illustrations, making this a useful resource for talking about the importance of valuing each others' strengths.
  India and Oswaldo take an instant dislike to each other, making judgments based on stereotypes, and do not work effectively together. India's friends lobby her cause and Oswaldo gives India another chance to excel at something she can learn to do well - roller-skate. The animals' antics are lots of fun.

• Arlon, Penelope 2006, Tree, (Eye know series), Dorling Kindersley, London, 19 p.
  This informative and beautifully presented book, suitable for students in Prep - Year 4, looks at a range of subjects relating to trees. This particular title is one of six in the Eye Know series, which engages students through lift-the-flaps, cut-outs and fold-out pages. It could be used to support Studies of Society and Environment and Science.
  This title covers a variety of tree-related topics including types of trees, the lifecycle of a tree, leaves, seasons, rainforests and materials made from trees. Each page is a visual feast, brimming with clear and bright photographs. The page design is excellent and makes good use of boxed text, a variety of font styles and sizes, and a range of visual effects. Scientific concepts are explained in simple, easy-to-understand language. The inclusion of facts and questions encourage discussion and further exploration. Every double-page spread features an interactive element that offers alternative access to the text. A well-composed contents page and index is also included.

• Azar, Penny 2001, Encore! Encore!, Scholastic Australia, Hunters Hill, N.S.W, 31 p.
  From Monday to Friday children are tutored in various performing arts at Miss Fine's Music and Dance Academy culminating in the End-of-Year Spectacular. 'Practice makes perfect' is the lesson in this lively picture book.
  The beautifully executed pencil drawings are highly expressive and use a variety of perspectives to help draw the reader into the story. Most pages carry no more than two lines of simple text making it manageable for early readers. A shared reading could facilitate a discussion of the use of language conventions such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, exclamation marks and ellipsis. Children might consider how the author has built suspense into her writing.

• Broad, Michael 2006, Broken bird, Puffin, London, 24 p.
  Born with only one wing, Broken Bird refuses to accept the 'broken' status cast upon him. Perfect for reading aloud, this would be a wonderful resource to examine the characteristics of resilience and to help build classroom and school communities that value, celebrate and respond to diversity.
  Taunted and teased for being different, Broken Bird sets off to find a place of belonging. Using his two feet, he meets a variety of creatures with no wings at all, and though they cannot fly, unlike Broken Bird, they can swim, slither or run. He then wonders if perhaps he is a city bird. Braving the urban streets, he meets 'Scary Bird', a fellow broken bird and, through their acceptance of each other, they find laughter and happiness. The mixed-media illustrations are rich and warm in their intensity and are beautifully evocative of the story's emotion and pathos. Broken Bird's positive and enterprising spirit will appeal to children and adults alike. His character's capacity to focus on his strengths and see the possibilities in difficult situations would be an excellent point of discussion in Health and Physical Education.

• Dann, Lucy Wiidagoo; Riches, Francine Ngardarb (illus) 2000, Bardi counting book, Magabala, Broome, W.A, 22 p.
  This cleverly designed counting book in the Bardi language develops the concept of Western mathematical counting to ten. This pocket-sized resource will help develop early number skills in children of any heritage. The bright illustrations with their clearly defined images will stimulate young students to create their own examples.
  The Bardi language counting words are arrinyii (one), gooyarr (two), irrjar (three) and niimana (many). The numbers four to ten are represented here by combinations of groupings containing up to three animals. The visual number sentences show examples such as two crayfish and two crayfish making four joodanjoodan (the Bardi word for crayfish). A Bardi pronunciation guide and lists of the language words for the animals and counting shown in this book are a useful adjunct. A cultural note and information on the author and illustrator are included.

• Donaldson, Julia; Sharratt, Nick (illus) 2006, Hippo has a hat, Macmillan Children's, London, 20 p.
  When the animals go on a shopping spree, there's chaos in the clothes shop. The short, sharp, rhyming sentences in this story make it an excellent book for newly independent readers. It could also be used to support prediction and phonemic awareness.
  Once Zebra, Duck, Flamingo and all the other animals are clothed and adorned, they parade their fashion sense in a street party. While the storyline and text is fun, punchy and simple, the outrageous detail is in the dazzling, psychedelic illustrations. Highly patterned clothing of spots, stripes, checks and flowers are an interesting juxtaposition against the natural patterning of the animals' skin and paisley carpet on the shop floor. The various designs would make an excellent springboard for patterning activities in both Mathematics and the Visual Arts. Big, bold and bright, this book is destined to be a popular favourite with students.

• Fox, Mem; Vivas, Julie (illus) 1983, Possum magic, Omnibus, Norwood, S. Aust, 31 p.
  Hush, an endearing possum, is suffering from invisibility so she and Grandma Poss partake of the peculiar culinary delights of each Australian capital city as they seek a cure. The illustrations are superb and although the story is somewhat predictable, this is one not to be missed.

• Fox, Mem; Horacek, Judy 2004, Where is the green sheep?, Viking, Camberwell, Vic, 30 p.
  Young children will delight in this 'wonderfully woolly' picture book that engages and entertains its audience by encouraging them to search for a missing green sheep. The simple repetitive rhyming text is ideal for early word recognition and encouraging audience participation, making it a wonderful book to read aloud. Beginning with the blue sheep, readers are introduced to the rest of the flock who come in a variety of colours and shapes, and are involved in numerous activities. But one question is asked repeatedly, 'Where is the green sheep?' To the delight of readers all is revealed on the last page. Gorgeous, uncluttered illustrations in soft muted colours on white glossy pages appropriately match the one line of text per page. Readers will enjoy the actions, antics and facial expressions of the adorable woolly sheep. The font is clear, bolded and sized to suit the target audience.

• French, Simon; Rawlins, Donna 2002, Guess the baby, ABC Books, Sydney, 32 p.
  This joyous picture book about the needs and care of babies is a winner. With its beautifully drawn illustrations and delightful text, it's perfect for reading aloud. Useful for Science (Life and Living) Studies of Society and Environment (Culture and Identity).
  When Sam brought his baby brother Jake to school for show-and-tell, the visit inspired the children to bring along photos of themselves as babies for a guessing competition. One baby photo had them all puzzled as to the baby's identity (Mr Judd, the teacher). French's first person narrative involves the reader in the guessing competition and most of the enjoyment is derived from the realisation that Mr. Judd too once ate 'blobby baby food' and had 'yukky nappies'. The illustrations are very engaging: sixteen children are pictured both as child and baby, each one clearly an individual. Blocks of bright colour are set against a white background and there is constant interaction between the children and the teacher.

• Gleeson, Libby; Blackwood, Freya 2006, Amy and Louis, Scholastic Press, Lindfield, N.S.W, 27 p.
  This beautiful book captures the joyous bond between two young friends, Amy and Louis, as they are immersed in the daily and important work of childhood - creative and imaginative play. Perfect for reading aloud, this book will evoke rich and emotive discussions about relationships and playful endeavours.
  Cardboard boxes, blankets, washing baskets, spades and garden hoses are the tools of these enthusiastic young inventors and old dress-ups, their creative attire. No matter whether Amy is deeply engrossed in playdough or Louis in construction, a special call draws them together for shared play. 'Coo-ee, Lou-ee' brings Louis scurrying through Amy's broken fence with 'secrets to share'. When Amy moves far, far away, brown and white streetscapes reflect the barren bleakness of both children's hearts. But because their bond stretches across the continents, they discover their coo-ee does as well. While the text is relatively simple, the depth and emotion is captured in the sensitively responsive illustrations. Warm, engaging and insightful, they are affirming of the vital role of creative self-expression and exploration in child development.

• Godwin, Jane; Cox, David (illus) 2001, Millie starts school, Puffin, Ringwood, Vic, 47 p.
  This engaging collection of four stories focuses on Millie's participation in the group activities of her Year One class. The simple direct text, set in clear typeface, is ideal for readers venturing into chapter books. Each of the stories covers the concerns of children of that age, including painting, loose teeth, birthday presents and a nativity play. The portrayal of the characters is authentic, especially of Millie and Mrs Long, her empathic teacher. Cox's lively cartoon-style watercolour-and-ink illustrations beautifully capture the children's interactions and class situations. The book would be useful for Studies of Society and Environment (Culture and Identity).

• Gower, Catherine; He, Zhihong (illus) 2005, Long-Long's New Year : a story about the Chinese Spring Festival, Frances Lincoln Children's Books, London, 29 p.
  It is the day before Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) and Long-Long, in a cartload of cabbages, is being pedalled into town by Grandpa. Useful to support Languages Other Than English (Chinese) and to develop students' awareness of and appreciation for other cultures (Studies of Society and Environment, Culture and identity).
  In order to buy food and decorations for the family's Spring Festival celebrations, Long-Long and his grandpa need to sell their cabbages. Although beset by a series a problems, through Long-Long's hard work, ingenuity and warm-heartedness, their cabbages are sold. Vivid scenes of the hustle and bustle of a pre-holiday marketplace are rendered across double-page spreads. Detailed and colourful drawings set against a background of warm washes and tan rice paper, capture both the excitement of the coming celebrations and the love between child and grandparent. A glossary helps explain the significance of the Chinese words used throughout the story. A warm and understated story, students will benefit from this authentic and child-eye view of life in contemporary China.

• Graham, Bob 2001, Has anyone here seen William?, Walker, London, 28 p.
  From the moment he takes his first step (falling down the front stairs), William and his wind-up bear find that there is wide world to explore. Young students will delight in William's mischievous activities, making this a perfect book for reading aloud. William has become a mobile creator of chaos and the title of this book becomes his family's most frequently asked question. Graham's wonderfully expressive ink line and watercolour illustrations, in his distinctive cartoon style, capture William and his escapades perfectly. This little gem of a book could be used to support Studies of Society and Environment (Time, Continuity and Change).

• Graham, Bob 2002, Jethro Byrde : fairy child, Walker, London, 28 p.
  Annabelle's dream of finding fairies comes true when she hears something bounce off the service station driveway and hit the fence. This is a magical story that will delight its intended audience and one that will draw out children's personal belief about fairies. Poking her way over the weeds and through the fence, Annabelle meets Jethro Byrde, a fairy child, and his family. Together they have the most wonderful afternoon, sharing fairy cakes and tea, playing a tiny fiddle and silver whistle, and dancing and singing. Annabelle tries to introduce the Byrdes to her parents, but they have no interest in, or time for, fairies. Beautiful illustrations stretch across whole pages and some are framed in small boxes between paragraphs of text. Teachers may wish to use this story for building knowledge on how to categorise fiction and non-fiction texts.

• Hartley, Karen; Macro, Chris 2006, Ant, (Bug books series), Heinemann Library, Oxford, 32 p.
  This attractive child-centred series contains comprehensive information through a text suitable for confident readers. It is illustrated with high-quality colour photographs that provide useful picture cues and alternative access to the book by pre-readers. The text begins with a simple definition of the species and then discusses appearance, size, food, habitat, reproduction, locomotion, predators and life span. The reader is asked to consider the needs of the insect if kept for observation or as a pet. A table of contents, index, glossary and a large clearly labelled diagram are included.

• Hobbs, Leigh 2006, Fiona the pig's big day, Penguin, Camberwell, Vic, 32 p.
  Fiona 'was a pig' but such a neat, orderly clean one that her parents were baffled and concerned. Hobbs's engaging illustrations, entertaining text and unusual slant on things make this a lively book for young students, especially those who related to Hobbs's Old Tom books.
  Fiona's attempts to please her parents led them to conclude that perhaps they were the ones who needed to change, so they took appropriate action. The family is a loving one and will invite rich discussion. The illustrations are joyous and exuberant, especially those of Fiona's dance preparations. The conclusion is neat, if a little too hasty, with all parties satisfied. A useful book to encourage appreciation of individual differences and acceptance of others.

• Hughes, Monica 2002, Our bodies : from head to toe, (Our world series), Heinemann Library, Oxford, 24 p.
  The simplicity of language and clarity of the photographs provide an excellent stimulus for discussing children's experiences of their own body. Part of the Our world series, its purpose is to introduce the basic concepts of a child's immediate environment. Useful for Health and Physical Education (Enhancing Personal Development).
  Large, clearly reproduced photographs against bold background colours show bodies in various positions, different parts of the human body and the things that can be done with these different parts. A simple sentence, sometimes contained within a text bubble, describes each picture. The illustrations reflect children from a variety of different cultural backgrounds. The contents page, picture glossary and index are easily accessible and are a wonderful introduction to the textual features of non-fiction books.

• Hurst, Elise 2004, Maximilian Jones, Lothian, South Melbourne, 30 p.
  A young boy called Max creates mayhem in his town when he opts to call his new pet dog Max. This humorous and delightful story could be used to support an acceptance and appreciation of individuality (Health and Physical Education, Enhancing Personal Development).
  When Max finds a stray dog and decides to call him Max, the two immediately become best friends. Enjoying a day at the village fair, the two mates meet the pet shop owner who changes all the pets' names to Max. It does not take long before all the townspeople rename their houses and pretend their names are Max as well. As Max-mania grips the village only one person foresees the impending disaster. The large, brightly coloured comical characters add a sense of fun and liveliness to the text. The small and unusual font makes the text difficult for children to read but it would be excellent as a read-aloud.

• Kabai, Belinda 2006, Aukam : (the woman who wove by the light of the moon), Black Ink Press, Thurongowa, Qld, 20 p.
  This beautifully presented, bilingual picture book was produced to promote an understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture. A charming tale about the moon, it has wide cross-curricular applications across Culture and Identity in Studies of Society and Environment, Earth and Beyond in Science, and creative innovations on texts in English.
  This title features the Indigenous Australian language, Kalaw Kawaw Ya, spoken on Saibai Island and the other top western islands of the Torres Strait. In simple language, with repetitive elements, the story tells the tale of a woman who wove by the light of the moon. It gives a lovely explanation of the 'face' that is often perceived in the moon. Each double-page opening follows the same format - embedded in a highly decorative border is an illustration on the left hand-side with the text and its translation on the right. The bold, stylised images, created with coloured pencils and ink, have elements of traditional Indigenous art and are rich in colour. A brief biography of the Torres Strait Islander author is also included.

• King, Stephen Michael 1998, Henry and Amy : right-way-round and upside down, Scholastic, Sydney, 30 p.
  In this delightfully light-hearted book, there is definitely an attraction of opposites between Henry and Amy. This many-layered book is a celebration of diversity and is ideal for reading aloud or reading alone.
  Henry perceives his world in reverse but is quite unfazed by the unexpected, whereas neat-and-tidy little Amy has everything under control. After she and Henry bump into one another, literally, she gently teaches him many things including right from left, up from down and 'his front from his back'. Henry, after kitting her out in 'a coat and hat that didn't match', teaches her his own spatial and directional concepts, such as 'back to front', 'topsy-turvy' and rolling downhill sideways. The friendship is cemented in their appreciation of each other's differences. These quite weighty concepts are delivered in a warmly humorous manner through both the text and illustrations - the harmony between the two is exquisite.

• Laguna, Sofie; Argent, Kerry (illus) 2002, Too Loud Lily, Omnibus, Norwood, S. Aust, 30 p.
  'Everyone told Lily Hippo she was too loud'. At home and at school she disrupted the routine and disturbed the peace. Then one day, the new teacher Miss Loopiola, harnessed Lily's talent for making noise. The almost noisy illustrations and a text that matches, makes this a very enjoyable picture book.
  As intrusive and loud Lily rollicks through a series of incidents, Argent's delightful colour pencil and watercolour illustrations support and carry sections of the story to its satisfying conclusion. Lily's femininity, indicated by her bead and flower bracelet, is no barrier to her boisterousness, which expresses itself in her perpetually open mouth and dramatic movements. The text is crammed with words expressing sound and Laguna uses understatement to great effect.

• Lester, Alison 2000, Ernie dances to the didgeridoo, Hodder Children's, Sydney, 34 p.
  This delightful book, illustrated in Lester's distinctive style, is a fount of information for younger readers. The seasons and other terms in Aboriginal culture are explained along with vivid depictions of the terrain.
  Ernie is spending a year in Arnhem Land so his Tasmanian family is replaced by five Aboriginal children - Sammi, Christine, Joseph, Patrick and Jenna. He writes letters home about all their activities as governed by the Aboriginal seasons - Kudjewk (monsoon), Bangkerreng (harvest time), Yekke (cool weather), Wurrkeng (early dry season), Kurrung (hot dry season) and Kurnumeling (pre-monsoon season). Meanwhile the family back home are also doing Arnhem Land activities. Interestingly there are common strands between the two. A wonderful book to encourage the understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity.

• Malyan, Sue 2005, Sea creatures, (Look closer series), Dorling Kindersley, London, 23 p.
  Close-up colour photography of various sea creatures will entice young students to tackle the supporting text. A valuable resource that supports both the Science (Life and Living) and English in the Early Years.
  The Look closer series provides excellent non-fiction material for lower primary students, with separate titles dedicated to reptiles, sea creatures, birds and bugs. A large high-definition photograph of a specific species extends across each double page spread. An attention-grabbing heading is followed by one short paragraph that describes a characteristic clearly evident in the main photograph. A few simple statements from the creature's first 'person' perspective provide further information. Large print and simple vocabulary make the text manageable for beginning readers. A number of descriptive words scattered around the illustration promote vocabulary building. The format is one that young students might use to present their own first research project. The resource also features 'Did you know' spots, illustrations that compare creature size to human, a simple index and glossary.

• Mayer, Cassie 2007, Shopping, (Our global community series), Heinemann Library, Oxford, 24 p.
  This title introduces readers to shopping in a variety of different cultural contexts. Part of the Our global community series, its purpose is to examine a familiar aspect of life and how it 'looks' in different countries. Useful for experimental and early readers in English and to support positive attitudes towards cultural diversity in Studies of Society.
  This simple, well designed non-fiction text explores shopping around the world, types of markets and the types of things people shop for. A large, clear photograph dominates the top of each page, with a small uncomplicated sentence appearing along the bottom in large text. Much cultural information about clothing, food types and building structures is embedded in the photographs that could be used to stimulate wider discussion. The contents page, picture glossary and index are easily accessible and are a wonderful introduction to the textual features of non-fiction books.

• Niland, Deborah 2007, Annie to the rescue, Viking, Camberwell, Vic, 32 p.
  Annie is a young girl experiencing life and trying to be brave when confronted with new situations. Young children will identify with the emotions expressed in this attractive picture book and teachers will recognise the opportunity to discuss fears, courage and sibling teasing as they read this book aloud.
  Annie tries to please her mother and do everything correctly and without any fuss. One day she climbs a tree to rescue her cat, but the situation reverses. The cat nimbly climbs down, leaving Annie stuck in the branches. This test of her courage is not helped by her brother's teasing but, encouraged by her watchful mother, Annie overcomes her fear of falling. This newfound confidence gives her the impetus to play a trick on her brother. The rich vocabulary, coupled with the synchronicity of text and illustration, conveys the messages beautifully. Those familiar with Niland's work will recognise the same endearing characters from her award-winning Annie's chair.

• Niland, Deborah When I was a baby, Puffin, Camberwell, Vic, 24 p.
  In beautifully simple language, this delightful picture book captures the quintessential elements of being a baby, as viewed through the eyes of the now, 'big boy'. Particularly suited to early childhood classrooms, this book offers an achievable and satisfying challenge to newly emergent readers. It could be used to support English and Study of Society and Environment (Culture and Identity).
  A favourite blanket, crawling, first teeth and mushy food are the everyday parts of a baby's life that feature in the text and illustrations. Although not directly mentioned, the frequently depicted family dog is also a willing and joyful participant, whose presence adds another dimension. As baby grows into a bigger boy, running and jumping, lots of teeth and his new baby sister become his new focus, but one love from babyhood still strongly endures, cuddles. Big, beautiful round faces dominate each page and are framed by a strong background colour. Short and uncomplicated sentences capture the day-to-day goings on in child-friendly language that will have great appeal with the intended audience. The light cardboard pages, rounded corners and the small, square format will ensure this book's longevity in young, eager hands.

• Novak, Jiri Tibor 2003, Great ocean walk, Lothian, South Melbourne, 29 p.
  A boy and his father take a lengthy beach walk, the boy gathering all manner of debris and driftwood, cast up by the waves. While the father snoozes the boy builds a 'super-floating-para-gliding ship' from his 'treasures' and the picnic tablecloth.
  In this clever mixture of photographs and paintings, the reader follows the young collector, amused as Dad's miraculous bag that stores stones, feathers, crates, car parts driftwood and a picnic lunch! Novak's long-faced characters dominate the somewhat bleak beach scene, with bright colours used for their clothing and the collected items. The simple text, in hand-printed script, sets the scene and records conversations. Children could enjoy guessing what possibilities the treasures offer. This is a creative, stimulating picture book, which could be a springboard for discussion in early childhood classes.

Cut-out holes frame each creature while other 'secret animals' are hidden on the pages. Oliver focuses on individual creatures from the Australian desert - animals doze in burrows, lurk in the Spinifex and quiver in holes Apart from being a feast for the eyes, with its hand-coloured linocuts and pencil rubbings, this delightful book is informative and beautifully written.. Adoptive families, step-families, multi-cultural families, one-parent families, families with two parents of the same sex, as well as the traditional nuclear family are represented. Living arrangements, habits and physical appearances are all mentioned in a way that validates the similarities and differences between families. The cartoon-like illustrations, outlined in black, are as bold in colour as they are playful. Both human and animals characters are featured - a penguin standing upon the first of a line of three chooks represents an adoptive-family structure.   The book emphasises that hairstyles are reflective of a variety different factors - climate, environment, culture, fashion, age, culture and special events. Each double-page opening consists of a stunning, large and clear photograph on one page, with corresponding text and a speech bubble on the facing page. The speech bubbles provide an insight into the depicted children's lives and show a range of thoughts and feelings that will resonate with young viewers. The carefully chosen photographs convey unwritten information about each child's culture and environment, providing wonderful stimulus for further discussion and research. A world map at the back links a thumbnail photograph of each child with their corresponding country of residence.   This sensitive and informative look at asthma will help all students to understand and value equity and diversity. Each of the books in the Like you, like me series focuses on a particular special need, or medical condition, through the eyes of a real-life young person with that condition. The clear and uncomplicated language and presentation are well suited to the target audience.
  Zack walks the reader through his family life, daily activities and the special routines and equipment he needs to manage his asthma. In positive and simple language, he explains terminology such as asthma, allergies, airways, house-dust mites, preventer and reliever. Zack also models the use of his inhaler, peak flow meter and spacer device. A lovely focus of the book is Zack's friendship with his sporting mates. They are both respectful of, and responsive to, Zack's medical condition. Specialist words appear in bold and are explained in accompanying fact boxes or the glossary at the back. The photographs, large and appealing, capture Zack in the everyday settings of his home, sporting and social activities. An index and web links to further information are also included.

• Rawlins, Donna 2007, Big and little, Random, Milsons Point, N.S.W.
  Shipley (a panda) and Gwendoline (a hippopotamus) receive presents that are more size appropriate for the other. And while in the end, they both end up swapping, it's the playful fun in the meantime that makes this book such a delight. Useful to explore size in Mathematics.
  Shipley couldn't quite make his feet reach the pedal of his tricycle, but he had enormous fun with the wrapping paper. Even though Gwendoline's bottom was too big for her pedal car, she found that tooting the horn was just as entertaining. When each of them came together at playgroup, their inventiveness continues and it is with each other that they play. The cleverly constructed text, which includes repetitive and cumulative elements, offers rich opportunities for the exploration of written language. Themes of creativity, friendship, sharing and problem solving are dealt with in a natural yet engaging style. The illustrations, striking in their use of vibrant, contrasting colours and strong patterns, will have great appeal with young readers.

  This title discusses bodies of all shapes and sizes, and promotes healthy eating, exercise and good personal hygiene. Useful for Health and Physical Education (Promoting the Health of Individuals and Communities).
  The My healthy body series is aimed at lower primary students. It contains simple text, two pages to a chapter and expansive colour photos or diagrams. The large text is accessible to emergent readers and comprises short paragraphs and captions. The illustrations show young people cleaning teeth, washing hands, brushing hair and exercising. Children from a variety of different cultural backgrounds are represented throughout. A glossary completes each book.

  Everyone knows that rooster crowing heralds the start of the day, especially on a farm. However, when Rooster wakes up with a sore throat, the repercussions are enormous. Farmyard animal sounds and clever word play make this perfect for reading aloud.
  In this cumulative text, Farmer Ted sleeps in - so the eggs aren't collected, the cows are not milked, the sheep are not sheared and the pigs are not fed. The cacophony that ensues still fails to wake the farmer. Then, with a stroke of ingenuity and in a spirit of team cooperation, the animals form a pyramid to hoist the ailing Rooster to the farmer's window and part of the problem is solved. Now the dilemma of how to complete all the chores in a short space of time presents itself. Children will laugh at the amusing illustrations of how the animals pitch in to help each other. Although obviously American in appearance, this farmyard story translates easily to the Australian context. This book entertainingly shows what can be achieved through camaraderie and solidarity.

  This vibrant book will delight young readers as it encourages them to explore and share everyday aspects of their lives - the objects, places, people and activities of personal interest. It is especially useful for the construction of identity and explorations of Place and Space in Studies of Society and Environment.
  Written in basic, repetitive language, this title offers newly emergent readers the opportunity for success with independent reading. Each double-page spread features a flap which reveals the particular topic being explored, for example, 'where I live', 'my playtime' and 'the clothes I wear'. Visual clues on the left-hand side support readers in their prediction of the text underneath the flap. A space is also provided to include a relevant photograph and label. Bright, solid colours and vividly contrasting patterns are a feature of the naively drawn illustrations. The end pages feature the word 'me' written in many different languages and students will enjoy researching which word belongs to which language. They may also enjoy innovating on the basic scaffold of the text to create their own stories.

  The author describes in word and paint her life at La Perouse as a child with family and friends, the sea and all that the seaside environment had to offer for food and play. Useful for Studies of Society and Environment (Culture and Identity).
  The shack that Elain's father built for them, while not perhaps meeting the normal standards of housing, was like a palace to Elaine and her siblings. She describes how they made it habitable during the extremes of weather and how they played in 'the biggest backyard in the world'. The illustrations are in bold colours, with two-dimensional, basic shapes edged in black. The minimal perspective and stylised figures emphasise the childlike simplicity of the story, in particular the warmth of the family atmosphere and the magnitude of the environment in relation to the inhabitants. Despite the description of poverty in material things, the story brings out the simple joys of childhood in a welcoming family with caring parents.

• Santo, William C 2006, My country in Gudjal, Black Ink Press, Thuringowa, Qld, 24 p.
  This simply formatted, bilingual picture book features the language of the Gudgal people of Northeast Queensland. It was produced to promote an understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture and has wide cross-curricular applications. It could be used to support Studies of Society and Environment (Culture and Identity; Place and Space), weather in Science, and creative innovations on texts in English.
  Each opening features a full-page coloured illustration of an environmental element such as clouds, rain, a dry season, a burning fire, or the moon. On the adjoining page, the element's name is written in Gudjal with the English translation written underneath. (The Gudjal language was traditionally an oral language with its own set of sounds and rules.) A pronunciation guide at the back outlines the pronunciation of vowels and consonants and the appropriate placement of the word stress. There is a contemporary feel to Santo's series of books. Although produced in a small, square format, similar to that of a classroom reader, they have application across all the primary years. The bold, stylised images, created with acrylic paint on cardboard, are reminiscent of traditional Indigenous art and rich in their natural-world palette. A brief biography of the Indigenous author is also included.

• Simmons, Jane 2004, Pog and the birdies, Orchard, London, 30 p.
  From the creator of Daisy, this is a whimsical story starring two mischievous cats. Simmons' vibrant and gentle illustrations and charming story make this a wonderful read-aloud. It deals with the themes of friendship and trust.
  When a little bird lands next to Pog and starts to sing, Pog thinks it's the sweetest of sounds. But then along comes Puss-tat with ideas of much more entertaining play - chasing birdies. The trust that the birdies have for Pog is lost and after the fun and games of chasing and pouncing, Pog is remorseful and unhappy to have lost his bird friends. Through consistently trustworthy behaviour, however, Pog and Pussy-tat eventually regain the birds' faith and friendship. The shades and tones in this book are soft and muted, featuring pastel versions of Simmons' typically brighter and intense hues. They mirror the light and playful story and characters. Some of the illustrations are expansive while others are small and artistically interspersed throughout the text. The heart-warming feel of this book will have wide appeal with both adults and children alike.

  A young boy and his teddy anticipate the opening the big, wobbly parcel that will reveal a new playful pup. Evocative illustrations will engage young children in predicting outcomes and discussing how friendships work. When rough play leads to an accident the boy and his puppy work together to make it better.
  The print is large enough to easily examine the features of written text in guided reading lessons. The use of quotation marks, ellipsis and onomatopoeia could be discussed. A number of descriptive words are highlighted in red. Some beginning readers will be able to revisit the simple text for an independent reading. The almost photo-realism of the detailed pencil drawings provides excellent visual support for the text.

  From the depths of the toy box come the loud and angry words, 'I'm never coming out for the rest of my life. Never, never, never, so there!' Young readers will relate to Danny's assertion of independence and will delight in the family relationships explored.
  Despite all threats, coaxings and make-believe from the family, Danny repeatedly shouts his declaration from inside his big toy box. However, when everyone leaves him, he soon emerges, unable to remember the cause of his tantrum. The colourful crayon illustrations occupy three-quarters of each double-spread and support the simple text set in the remaining area. This large, attractive picture will engender much laughter and discussion.

  This anthology of poems and rhymes is designed to appeal to children in early childhood. A fun read-aloud book, focussing on the perennial favourite - dinosaurs - it encourages predicting through rhyme and the supporting visual cues.
  The rhymes, featuring dinosaurs in a variety of different situations, invite both verbal and whole-body interaction. The literary quality of the rhymes is quite variable however, with the rhyming in some appearing forced and contrived. The cartoon-style illustrations are bright, colourful and highly patterned and will engage the intended audience.

• Wild, Margaret; Rawlins, Donna 2004, Seven more sleeps, Working Title, Kingswood, S.A, 32 p.
  The countdown to a birthday party is told through simple repetitive text and enhanced through illustrations showing mother, child and dog immersed in preparation. This book will inspire many learning activities based on sequencing, counting, craft, role-play and discussion of family celebrations.
  Each day Mum announces the number of sleeps left to which Baby Babs and Fog the Dog excitedly respond: 'Seven more sleeps' and 'Woof, woof, woof!' They pass the time by making their invitations and decorations, practising games and preparing the food. The activities are shown in illustrations full of shapes, patterns, colours and numbers that provide ample language and numeracy building opportunities. Repetition builds anticipation and will engage young students as they predict the next stage in the preparation. The ending is delightfully unexpected. Early childhood classes could plan, organise and record their own special event in response to this book.

• Wild, Margaret; James, Ann 1996, The midnight gang, Omnibus, Norwood, S.Aust, 32 p.
  This is the stuff of parents' nightmares - a toddler who absconds in the night. Linguistically and visually, the book provides an exciting and rewarding experience and will have great appeal with the intended audience. Brenda climbs out of her cot in the middle of the night and despite shedding her nappy in the cat flap, embarks on a nocturnal frolic with three like-minded friends. Starting in the park, they display surprising coordination for their age. Sailing high on the swings, they fly to the moon and ride a comets tail. Come sunrise, the grand adventure is over. Brenda retrieves her nappy from the cat flap and climbs back into her cot.
  There is a nice irony in Mum's approach to giving Brenda 'a nice little swing' in the park. Clearly she has no idea of her tiny daughter's abilities. The text is vividly expressive and the illustrations of richly-applied chalks on deep blue are brilliant in their luminescence. This truly delightful fantasy captures the helter-skelter adventure of toddlerhood.

• Willems, Mo 2004, Don't let the pigeon drive the bus!, Walker, London, 32 p.
  A brilliantly simple book, this story about a cajoling, tantrum-throwing, determined yet adorable pigeon will be extremely popular with children from Prep to Year 5. Willems is a professional animator, and each page has the feel of a perfectly frozen frame of cartoon footage - an excellent resource for developing visual and critical literacy - English (Evaluating and reconstructing meanings in texts) and The Arts (Visual Arts).
  The bus driver has to leave for a while and he makes one request of readers, 'Don't let the pigeon drive the bus.' What ensues is a passionate campaign from the big-eyed pigeon to do just that - drive the bus. With the deftness of a determined young child, tactics including reasoning, whining, begging and bargaining are put into play, but to no avail. Finally the pigeon erupts into a feather-flying tantrum, and in huge, scratchy, black-and-yellow capital letters yells, 'LET ME DRIVE THE BUS!!!' Only when a truck arrives and brings with it the promise of new driving possibilities, does hope return. The design is refreshingly minimal, focusing always on the pigeon - action, remarkable expression, and wild humour captured with just a few lines of text.
