Fiction criteria

In addition to the core selection criteria, the following points are to be considered when reviewing fiction resources.

Consider:

  1. Genre:
    • historical
    • adventure
    • romance
    • science fiction, etc.
  2. Quality of artwork and integration with text:
    • relevance of illustrations to text
    • proximity of illustrations to appropriate text
  3. Effectiveness of:
    • characterisation
    • plot development
    • sense of time and place
    • mood and atmosphere
    • dialogue
  4. Specially memorable or useful features:
    • flashbacks
    • first person narrative
    • clarity of writing
  5. Theme topics in demand and of interest to students.
  6. Literary qualities:
    • depth of perception
    • sensitivity of writing
    • use of humour
    • escapist literature
  7. Suitability for reading aloud - does it read well?
  8. Presentation:
    • overall presentation
    • educational use
    • binding
    • durability
