Fuller instructions are in the online help manual, SCISWeb manual (new window) especially the chapters, Connecting to SCISWeb (new window 1.4M
) and SCISWeb ordering (new window 1.4M
).
- It is suggested that you organise your resources into two piles: a pile of resources with ISBNs, and a pile of resources without ISBNs which may be DVDs, computer software, books from non-commercial publishers and posters.
- Items are ordered by ISBN (International Standard Book Number), ISSN (Internatonal Standard Serial Number), ISMN (International Standard Music Number) or SCIS record number (the unique number assigned to identify the individual record among the 900,000 residing in the national database). ISBN is the most common method for creating order files, followed by SCIS record numbers for resources that do not have ISBNs, etc.
- Print off and keep this SCIS Poster (new window
33k
) close to your workstation for a quick guide to ordering by ISBN or SCIS record number.
Make use of the Education Queensland SCIS Unit's free cataloguing service
for any items not found on the SCIS database.
- You need to logon to SCISWeb, the web interface through which you go to create orders and to search the database. Contact your teacher-librarian for your school's username and password.
- To logon, go to SCISWeb (new window), and click on the top right-hand box. A pop-up box appears. Enter your username and password details. The SCIS Customer Centre appears.
- Select the SCISWeb access option. The SCISWeb menu appears.
- Use the Create orders option to create and download files online. Exercises using the online Create orders facility are the focus for Worksheet 1 and Worksheet 2.
- Use Upload order file option to create an order offline and then upload it to the database for processing. This is recommended for large orders of over 50 records.
- When creating an order file, either for online or offline options, it is best, for accuracy, to scan in ISBNs, ISSNs and ISMNs using a barcode reader.
- To locate SCIS record numbers where the resource does not have an ISBN, use SCIS OPAC to find, retrieve and display catalogue records by topic, author, format (i.e. videorecording or website), etc. Two levels of searching are available: Basic Search and Guided Search. Exercises using each of these options are outlined in Worksheet 2 and Worksheet 3. Both SCIS record numbers and ISBNs, etc., may be mixed together in the one order file.
- Handy hint when mixing and matching ISBNs and SCIS record numbers in the one order file: You can actually copy and paste SCIS record numbers, once found, into a waiting Create Orders file you're keeping open. Keep two Internet Explorer pages open: the Create Orders page open, and the SCIS OPAC search screen. To open two windows, you can either hold down the Ctrl-N, or, alternatively, go to File, New, and click on Window. You may need to navigate through the second window set up either the Create Orders page, or SCIS OPAC search screen options. To toggle backwards and forwards between the two windows, use Alt-Tab buttons by pressing down the Alt-key, and then the Tab-key on the left of your keyboard.
- Steps for importing the completed order file into your library system will depend on the library system in your school library. Vendor-specific instructions should be available. The vendor or supplier of your library system should be your primary contact for any problems in this area.
