SCIS ordering and downloading

When the ISBN of the resource scanned into an order file does not match the information in the downloaded SCIS record, a duplicate ISBN can be the source of the problem. A duplicate ISBN is the same ISBN assigned in error by the publisher to two or more different resources. When there are two SCIS records with the same ISBN on the database, only one record will be picked up in the order file and downloaded into the library system. This may not be the item you have in hand. Be vigilant when checking that barcodes, ISBNs and resource title match. When you come across conflicting, or mismatched information, you need to use Basic search to find the SCIS record number for the resource you actually have in hand. Scanning in the ISBN using Basic search will retrieve all SCIS records with that particular ISBN. You can then view all records and order the correct record by the SCIS record number when creating your next order file.

Exercise: checking for duplicate ISBNs

1. You have a resource entitled Who's been sleeping in my grave? for which you scanned in the ISBN 0671529420. The information does not match with the record downloaded. Using Basic search, find the SCIS record number for the record that matches the resource in hand.

2. Kim Thompson wrote a resource called: French: activity book. Its ISBN is 1882331265. You scanned in the ISBN in your order file, and ended up with another resource by the same author. Using Basic search, find the SCIS record number for the record that matches the resource in hand.
