This October the team at Library Services are inviting all EQ Early Phase educators to the annual 'Something that begins with Stories' Workshop Day. Join the team for an engaging, relevant and fun day of professional development where we'll explore how ICTs can be used to engage students in the reading and exploration of literary texts. The day is specifically designed to support teachers to begin their journey in developing a repertoire of listening, speaking, viewing, reading, writing and creating activities that include the use of ICTs. Learning experiences during the day will be linked to the new Australian Curriculum and the Student ICT Expectations for P-3 students.

Note: This page is for Department of Education and Training staff only.
The term multiliteracies was coined by the New London Group in 1996. The concept seeks to broaden the understanding of literacy in teaching and learning and to acknowledge a multiplicity of discourses within the school curriculum. The term aims to highlight two related aspects of the increasing complexity of texts: (a) the proliferation of multimodal ways of making meaning where the written word is increasingly part and parcel of visual, audio, and spatial patterns; (b) the increasing salience of cultural and linguistic diversity characterized by local diversity and global connectedness.

Simply, multiliteracies refers to

Making meaning through the visual interpretation of texts and images

Having the ability to make meaning from text (and images) in more than one language

Library Services is conducting an ACARA and Multimodal Texts workshop on 15 and 16 September from 8:45am til 3:00 pm at Coorparoo Education Precinct 347 Old Cleveland Road Coorparoo.
The workshop is being conducted to allow for teachers to extend their stay in Brisbane after the event. The school will be invoiced $100 for this workshop.
The workshop has been extended to two days due to the amount of work covered and the opportunity for participants to obtain their ICT Certificate accreditation at the end of the two days.
The workshop provides many opportunities for teachers to work with curriculum resources and software in preparation for the introduction of ACARA English and other KLAs.

Topics include:

character creation with reference to beasts/creatures/myths/legends using a Claymation process - storyboarding, character construction and camera work

blue/green screen movies and photography - no you do not have to have a green/blue room

creating eBooks that can be played on any computer with a browser or Adobe Flash Player installed. The software brings together movies, images and text enabling students to explore a wide range of digital technologies and text production

	Movie Maker and Literacy.

The ideas are linked to Literature and Literacy in the National Curriculum (ACARA), reflect the ideas of the four resource model and are all based on using the software on all MOE computers supplied to EQ staff and schools plus a few freeware programs. Most genres are covered as well as ideas for ACARA English. The illustrated texts used during the workshop will be available for loan as class sets (6 copies) at the end of the day from Library Services
All materials used and a full collection of resources containing all the tutorials, PowerPoints and software used during the workshop are provided to participants. This will allow participants to share their ideas with others on returning to their school or to reflect on the ideas covered at a later date. None of the PowerPoints are locked so can be adapted to suit the context of the school.

PD Certificates will be provided at the end of the workshop.
