After Year 12, successful students can undertake further studies at institutes of technical and further education (TAFE), private colleges and universities.
The school year runs from the end of January to mid-December and is divided into two semesters, each comprising two terms of approximately ten weeks each. There are holidays at the end of each term.

Students usually attend school from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m., Monday to Friday (there may be some variations in some schools).
For students attending full-time high schools in Queensland, there are no national or state-wide subject examinations. Student progress is assessed throughout the year by school based:
Continuous assessment provides students with many opportunities to improve their results and retention of subject matter. At the end of each term, students are given a report that records their progress in each subject. Usually, results on these reports are as follows:
On completion of each year level, students receive a school report showing subjects studied and levels of achievement.
On completion of Year 12, most students receive from the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA):
