Good marks for new application process

Page 6 Vol. 17, No. 6, July 2008

Teachers seeking positions in Queensland state schools will benefi t from a new application process that is more equitable and consistent than the previous system.

Introduced in April, the application and assessment process will apply to all teacher applicants, including graduates. Applicants will no longer respond to selection criteria as part of the process but instead must submit a folio and attend an interview.

The previous S system used to rate teacher applicants has been replaced by a ranking system. Strategic Human Resources Assistant Director- General Gary Barnes said the new process would help the department more clearly differentiate between teachers applying for positions. 'While there are some similarities with the previous system, the process will ensure all applicants, including graduates, are given the same opportunities to demonstrate their competence, knowledge and experience," Mr Barnes said.

He said instead of responding to selection criteria, applicants must submit a short statement demonstrating their knowledge of departmental reforms, initiatives and policies for teaching and learning.

"This statement will also give applicants an opportunity to highlight their competence against the Queensland College of Teachers' professional standards, as well as their professional aspirations," he said.

Strategic Human Resources principal advisor Leonie Shaw said the process was more equitable for graduates.

"Previously graduates who completed their fi nal professional experience or internship in a nonstate school were subject to a different application process to those in a state school," Ms Shaw said.

Another change is the assessment panel for graduate applicants will no longer include the applicant's supervising teacher. Panels will still include teachers with experience in supervising preservice teachers.

From 2010, grade point averages from tertiary studies will be considered when determining an applicant's ranking.

Ms Shaw said the application and interview process was trialled by schools and applicants in Term 1.

"Feedback indicated the process was a positive experience for applicants and panel members."

Existing applicants will be notified in the coming weeks of their transition to the new ranking process and given the chance to be reassessed. For more information visit
