Teacher Education Centres of Excellence

The Improving Teacher Quality National Partnership included the establishment of School Centres of Excellence to provide high quality professional/field experiences to preservice teachers and professional development for teachers.

The aims of the Teacher Education Centres of Excellence include:

• providing quality supervision, mentoring and support to preservice teachers
• strengthening linkages between preservice teacher education programs and the transition to employment as a teacher
• providing ongoing professional development for teachers
• promoting and demonstrating quality teaching, including behaviour management which improves student learning outcomes
• working with other schools to strengthen the quality of teaching and to improve student learning outcomes.

Clusters of state schools across Queensland are involved in the Teacher Education Centres of Excellence providing preservice teachers with practical and clinical in-school experiences that will enhance their teaching capabilities and ensure they are classroom and community ready.

Five Teacher Education Centres of Excellence each with a specific focus have been established.

• The Kelvin Grove Centre 512k has a focus on early, middle and senior phases of learning.
• The Mount Stuart Cluster 181k, led by William Ross State High School in Townsville, will focus on Indigenous students and community engagement.
• A cluster lead by Aspley Special School 270k is dedicated to preparing aspiring teachers for students with special needs.
• The Morayfield Cluster 215k will prepare preservice teachers for for developing Literacy and Numeracy in schools in low socioeconomic communities.
• A partnership between Benowa State High School and Benowa State School 675k is focussing on the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
