National Reforms - Improving Teacher Quality
The Improving Teacher Quality National Partnership includes a suite of national reforms to enhance school leadership and teacher quality by achieving consistency in national standards and teacher registration processes, and building a culture of performance development in all Australian schools.
The reforms target critical points in the teacher lifecycle to attract, train, develop and retain quality teachers and leaders in our schools and classrooms.
The national reforms include:
- Nationally consistent teacher registration processes

By strengthening the current mutual recognition arrangements between states and territories, it will be much easier for teachers and school leaders to move between jurisdictions. This will provide a genuinely national, mobile teaching workforce and improved access to quality teachers for all Australian students.
- National Professional Standards for Teachers
These standards will assist teachers and school leaders to assess performance against national competency benchmarks. They will also allow teachers and schools leaders who excel to be recognised for their achievements.
- National process for accrediting Accomplished and Leading teachers
- Teachers will be provided with enhanced opportunities for career advancement within education systems across Australia.
- A performance development culture in all Australian schools
Using the new national professional standards and existing capabilities frameworks, teachers and school leaders will be able to measure their performance against national competency benchmarks and identify further learning requirements.
The majority of these national reforms will be implemented by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL)
. AITSL provides national leadership for the Commonwealth, state and territory governments in promoting excellence in the profession of teaching and school leadership.
