Next Step Survey

Next Step is the Queensland Government's statewide survey of every student who completed Year 12 during the previous year in Queensland at government, Catholic and independent schools. The survey collects information about the initial study and employment destinations of young people after leaving school.

The 2016 Next Step survey was conducted between March and June 2016. More than 40 100 young people who completed Year 12 in 2015 participated in the survey.

Detailed results of the 2016 Next Step survey are available in a comprehensive statewide report and 19 regional reports.

Background

In April 2004, the Queensland Government issued the Schools Reporting Consultation Paper, which proposed an annual publication of post-school destinations of Queensland Year 12 students. This would complement the publication early in the year of Year 12 results by school.

The feedback from the schools reporting consultation showed broad support for a destination survey of students after finishing Year 12, provided that schools did not have to pay. This was endorsed and supported by the Schools Reporting Steering Committee resulting in the Queensland Government proceeding with the survey from 2005 at no cost to schools.

A similar survey, On Track External Link, has been conducted in Victoria since 2003.

Statewide and Statistical Area Level 4 main destination data are also available for download in Excel format Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheet 356K.

The survey complements schools' own surveys, by providing statewide data that allows schools to match local trends with statewide trends. It also provides schools with the option of relying upon Next Step survey data for destination information, at no cost to the school.
