Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

Building strong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through learning is a department priority. We work with local communities to improve education outcomes for indigenous students in a range of ways outlined under the department's Closing the Gap education strategy.

To effect maximum change, the strategy identifies a small number of targeted outcomes to close the gap:

• Halve the gap in Year 3 reading, writing and numeracy by 2012
• close the gap in student attendance by 2013
• close the gap in Year 12 retention by 2012

The department also has three school support units to provide professional development for teachers and administrators and programs and services to help schools improve indigenous student achievement. These Indigenous School Support Units are in:

• Far North Queensland
• North Queensland
• Central Southern Queensland
