Earlier this year I announced seven key priorities for the Department of Education and Training (DET) to help us meet our objective of offering Queenslanders a modern, responsive education and training system.
Our department is working hard to deliver major programs and reforms in areas such as student performance, early childhood education, infrastructure and training.
The seven key priorities will ensure that we, both individually and collectively, have the direction, structure and support to deliver on these important initiatives.
Our seven priorities are:
- early childhood education
- student and school performance
- training and skilling Queensland
- curriculum implementation
- building the education revolution
- workforce reform; and
- policy development
These priorities were developed to align with education and training targets set by the Federal Government and the Council of Australian Governments (COAG), as well as those contained in the State Government's Toward Q2: Tomorrow's Queensland strategy and our own strategic plan.
To give teachers and administrators the support and resources needed to implement these new priorities, I have changed the structure of the department.
The new structure will help us focus on what is needed, meet the challenges of the future, avoid duplication, reduce bureaucracy and encourage innovative thinking.
I will explain each of our seven priorities in more detail - including their targets and links to other initiatives and how they support teaching and learning in our schools - in subsequent Education Views columns.
Closing the gap
More so than any other department, DET has the capacity to make a positive difference to the lives of young Queenslanders.
To this end, we recently launched a new strategy to help reduce the gap in education outcomes for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
The Closing the Gap Education Strategy contains three key targets: to halve the gap in Year 3 reading and numeracy by 2012, to close the gap in attendance by 2013 and in Year 12 retention by 2013.
To help meet these targets, a new resourcing model has been introduced to ensure funds and programs for Indigenous students are delivered to where they are most needed.The strategy will help to ensure Indigenous outcomes remain a high priority for our department and that we stay focused on reforms to meet our COAG targets
