Rugby League star Matt Bowen has endorsed a reading program for primary school students about the importance of treating animals with care and understanding.

The North Queensland Cowboys player has written the foreword for a free four-part series of books produced by Primary Industries and Fisheries, Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation.

The series, largely targeted at Indigenous primary school students, has been distributed to 150 Queensland primary schools.

In his foreword Bowen recalls how he grew up in the Aboriginal community of Hope Vale in Cape York and developed a love for horse riding and animals.

Based on an original storyline by volunteer horse carer Rae-Jon Bunting, the illustrated Bwgcolman series chronicles the life of a foal born in an Indigenous community.
