A sum of its parts ... teachers, students and parents from a number of local high schools compete in the Sunshine Coast South District Maths Teams Tournament.

Add together more than 650 keen number crunchers from 19 Sunshine Coast high schools and you have a simple equation for a successful maths tournament.

Local state and non-state students arrived at Narangba Valley State High School on July 28 with their calculators and notepads ready to compete for prizes in the Sunshine Coast South District Maths Teams Tournament.

In groups of five, students had to answer a number of mathematical problem-solving questions in individual, teams and relay events. There were also brainteaser-style questions throughout the day.

Participants were entertained by guest speaker, Dr Marty Ross, a Melbourne mathematician who spoke about the beauty of mathematics and some of the mathematical tricks magician David Copperfield employs.

Tournament director and Narangba Valley State High head of mathematics Kevin Fullbrook said the tournament, now in its 19th year, continued to go from strength to strength.

'It was a sensational day in which the best and brightest students from the region were engaged in a challenging and competitive mathematical event,' Mr Fullbrook said.
