Day for Daniel promotes personal safety

20 July 2009

Schools are being invited to join in the Day for Daniel, a national day for promoting child safety awareness, by hosting an activity.

Day for Daniel is organised by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, established in 2005 by Denise and Bruce Morcombe after the abduction and suspected murder of their son Daniel in December 2003.

Mrs Morcombe said Day for Daniel was not a memorial day but a day of learning for children.

'Schools can participate in a variety of activities,' she said.

'These include a class talk about internet safety, a presentation by a school-based police officer, completing an interactive educational program like Being Safety Smart, watching our DVD Foundation Red or participating in a community walk.

'These educational activities are designed to provide life skills for children in a fun and informative manner without the fear factor.

'We also encourage that a red flavour be incorporated in the day - a colour which links Daniel's story in a discreet way to the importance of child safety education.'
