Queensland Rail work experience

June 2009

Secondary students can now explore careers in the state's rail industry through work experience in Queensland Rail (QR) workshops.

Queensland's education legislation previously prevented students from undertaking work experience because of insurance restrictions.

Education Queensland amended their insurance and education policy to allow students to undertake work experience at QR rail workshops, following a meeting between QR, Education Queensland and the State Government's insurers.

The policy change was a result of industry stakeholders working together in the Rail Manufacturing Skills Formation Strategy, an initiative of the Department of Education and Training.

Several secondary students have now started work experience at the QR Redbank workshop.

Students who successfully complete work experience at QR may undertake a school-based apprenticeship in the future.
