Switching off for climate change

MARCH 2009

Schools and their communities are being encouraged to participate in Earth Hour 2009.

The World Wildlife Fund initiative aims to raise awareness of climate change and makes it possible for individuals to take action and reduce greenhouse emissions.

Earth Hour 2009 will be held on March 28.

Everyone can help reduce electricity consumption by turning off lights and other electrical appliances for one hour from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm.

Department of Education, Training and the Arts environmental sustainability principal advisor Cam Mackenzie said 300 Queensland schools and TAFEs registered to participate in Earth Hour in 2008.

This year schools are being challenged to beat that number.

'We want to see as many schools as possible to register and encourage their communities to participate in energy efficiency actions,' Mr Mackenzie said.

'There are many ways schools can play a part. We suggest they organise activities on Friday, March 27.

'They can choose energy efficiency actions such as switching off lights and fans in classrooms when no one is in them, turning off equipment such as computers and printers when not in use and promoting the event to the school community.'

Information for schools about how to register and how to participate is available on the Earth Hour external page (will open in a new window) website.
