Practice tests to lift student achievement

MARCH 2009

Queensland state schools will use practice tests to prepare their students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 for this year's national tests, and to help assess their literacy and numeracy levels.

Professor Geoff Masters.

The move is one of several tools to be used to improve the literacy, numeracy and science achievement of Queensland students.

State schools will implement the tests by March 20.

The move is an early outcome from a review into Queensland's primary education system by Professor Geoff Masters, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Council for Educational Research.

Professor Masters was tasked with reviewing Queensland primary education after results from last year's National Assessment Program - Literary and Numeracy (NAPLAN) and Trends in International Maths and Science (TIMSS) tests.

A preliminary report was submitted at the end of January. A final report will be delivered by the end of April.
