Teachers, students and parents are urged to put their best foot forward in May for national Walk Safely to School Day.

The May 15 event aims to help reduce childhood obesity by encouraging healthy habits and physical activity, help save our environment by creating less greenhouse gas from car emissions and lessen traffic congestion around schools.

Parents are asked to walk their children to school but if it's too far from home, combine a walk with public transport or park the car a distance from the school gates and walk the rest of the way.

Parents, parent groups and teachers are also invited to organise special events for the day such as a healthy breakfast for every student who walks to school.

For more information and a special menu for the event developed by nutritionist Dr Rosemary Stanton visit the Walk Safely to School Day website external page (will open in a new window)

Walk Safely To School Day is organised by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, sponsored by the Australian Government and supported by all State, Territory and Local Governments, the Heart Foundation, Cancer Council, Diabetes Australia, beyondblue and Planet Ark.
