Director-General Julie Grantham made the announcement on November 19 and said effective from January 4 2010 there would be seven regions, each looking after the department's three areas of responsibility.

'Creating this single point of regional leadership is an exciting change for the department in terms of enhancing our performance and achievement across the state,' Ms Grantham said.

'The new arrangements will give our stakeholders a seamless service across education, training and early childhood education and care.'

Ms Grantham said aligning the regions more closely with those of the Department of Communities would improve interagency collaboration and achieve closer association with local governments.

'This realignment is an important step in the overall integration of the department's regional services, delivering greater flexibility and responsiveness to local client needs,' she said.

Each region will be overseen by a regional director who will be responsible for all three service areas.

Recruitment for regional directors is underway and successful applicants are expected to be announced in early December. They will start work on January 4 next year.

Regional plans and structures will be implemented from next March with the transition finalised by July.

Ms Grantham said school supervision arrangements would stay the same until March 1.

'The department's current regional and district offices will remain operational until opportunities for co-location or other arrangements arise,' she said.

'Even then, some staff may report through a particular region but be located in an adjacent region if this supports client service delivery.'
