A five-minute movie by North Queensland students featuring three penguins answering questions about global warming has taken out top honours in a national schools short film competition.

The Global Warming Wrap, by students from Mundingburra State School in Townsville, collected the national primary school award in the Kid Witness News (KWN) New Vision Awards.

The competition involved students from 63 primary and secondary schools across the country shooting, directing and starring in a five-minute video.

Mundingburra students were also recognised for their technical excellence, taking home awards in the special effects and editing categories.

They will represent Australia at the Asia Pacific KWN Regional Awards in Singapore in December.

KWN Ambassador and competition judge Toni Pearen said she was impressed with the quality of this year's video entries.

'Each entry is unique, both in topic and production, which proves the creativity and dedication our students have today,' Ms Pearen said.

The KWN program challenges students to work together to develop a five-minute video, involving all aspects of filmmaking including determining the subject matter, script writing, and filming as well as editing footage.
