Help for teacher training

Teachers and aspiring teachers are invited to apply for a range of departmental teaching scholarships.

Juggling work and study is a regular task - and a labour of love - for marine studies teacher Reuben Schmitt as he works towards his dream of teaching manual arts.

The Tannum Sands State High School teacher won a Department of Education and Training Professional Development Scholarship last year and is completing a six-month Graduate Certificate in Industrial Technology and Design through Griffith University which counts towards a Masters degree.

'It is very rewarding and makes you understand what the kids are going through,' Mr Schmitt said.

The scholarships cover tuition fees in a Graduate Certificate program, non-contact time for study and the chance to gain permanent employment in the high-demand subjects of industrial technology and design, mathematics B and C, chemistry and physics.

Applications close on November 4.

Primary science scholarships

Primary Science Scholarships which are being offered for the first time next year are helping to achieve the State Government's goal of employing 100 extra science teachers by 2012.

Aimed at teachers employed in Queensland state schools who wish to gain confidence and expertise in teaching science, the scholarships cover fees for a graduate certificate and non-contact time to help with study.

Applications close on November 4.

Help for new teachers

Financial support is also available for pre-service and aspiring teachers.

Graduate Employment Scholarships close on November 30 and are open to high-achieving, final-year, under-graduate teachers.

Teacher Education Scholarships are aimed at science and maths professionals to encourage them to start a new career in teaching in high-demand curriculum areas by undertaking a Graduate Diploma in Education.

Applications close on January 4 next year.
