Poster campaign encourages tolerance in schools
20 October 2009
Raising awareness among young people that the expression 'That's so gay' can be hurtful and discriminatory is the aim of a new campaign by lesbian and gay support group PFLAG.
PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbian and Gays) is hoping schools and communities will get behind the 'That's so Gay is so Yesterday' campaign, which comprises posters discouraging young people from using the terms 'you are so gay' or 'that is so gay'.
PFLAG Brisbane president Shelley Argent said the expression was meant as a put down, implying that being gay is bad.
'For many young people who are questioning their sexuality, the fear and self-loathing they may already be feeling could be exacerbated by these kinds of taunts,' Ms Argent said.
'Our concern is that it could lead young people to depression, suicide, truancy from school or running away from home.'
