Students share a love of reading with celebrity visitors

Booked ... Mitchelton State School's Pip Sturgeon, author Nick Earls, student and overall winner Tori Dipple and the Pyjama Foundation's Bronwyn Sheehan.
Students at Mitchelton State School read books and shared stories with popular author Nick Earls and Queensland Australian of the Year Bronwyn Sheehan during a recent visit.
The Brisbane students were the winners of the Pyjama Foundation's inaugural Reading Frenzy, an online read-a-thon supporting the foundation's Love of Learning program.
Ms Sheehan, founder of the Pyjama Foundation, said the visit was to congratulate the students and present them with their prizes.
'It was great to see so many children reading books and getting behind a project to help children in care with their literacy skills,' Ms Sheehan said.
Mitchelton teacher-librarian Pip Sturgeon said the experience had been very rewarding for the students.
'Not only did they get to indulge their love of reading but they were able to use their technology skills to build a website and update their blogs,' Ms Sturgeon said.
The Reading Frenzy is held in Term 2 each year. Schools interested in participating can contact The Pyjama Foundation by emailing tanya@thepyjamafoundation.com or phoning 3262 5569.
The Pyjama Foundation is a children's charity that recruits and trains volunteers from the community to become Pyjama Angels. Pyjama Angels visit a foster child each week to implement the Love of Learning program.
The one-on-one mentoring program involves reading with the child, playing educational games and helping them with their homework.
