Summer schools to support literacy and numeracy

01 September 2009

Summer schools for students needing extra help in literacy and numeracy will start this September holidays.

Summer schools for students needing extra help in literacy and numeracy will start this September holidays.

Students needing extra help in literacy and numeracy will attend summer schools during the September holidays as part of a Federal-State Government partnership.

Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson said the Summer Schools pilot program would be held across Queensland at 65 state schools, distance education sites and five community centres from September 28 to October 2.

'We know there are students who need more focused attention and support to lift their achievements, and that's what these Summer Schools aim to provide,' Mr Wilson said.

'Participating schools will determine students' eligibility to take part in Summer Schools based on their results from previous literacy and numeracy testing, including the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

'This is a unique learning opportunity that will engage students in 15 hours of literacy and numeracy tuition using a range of resources and modes of learning.

'We will be offering a second program in January 2010 to give students some extra support before the start of the new school year.'

The Summer Schools program is part of the $900 million Smarter Schools National Partnership Agreement between the State and Federal governments.

Mr Wilson said the Smarter Schools National Partnership Agreement included three specific partnerships - the Literacy and Numeracy National Partnership, Low Socio-Economic Status School Communities National Partnership, and the Improving Teacher Quality National Partnership.

'Under these National Partnerships, there will be reforms in the way we support schools in low socio-economic status communities, focus on improving literacy and numeracy outcomes, and in the quality of teaching,' he said.

Summer Schools are part of the Literacy and Numeracy National Partnership which will invest up to $138.6 million in literacy and numeracy reforms from 2009 to 2012.
