Clean Up Australia Day celebrates 20 years

Dust off those gloves and get the garbage bags out because it will soon be that time of the year when we Clean Up Australia.

Every year, from Broome to Burleigh, hundreds of thousands of Australians get stuck in and clean up their local environment by collecting and removing rubbish on Clean Up Australia Day.

Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson said this year marked a milestone - 20 years of Clean Up Australia Day and to celebrate schools were invited to participate.

'As well as being a fun day, the 2010 Schools Clean Up Day complements the department's focus on effective environmental education in schools,' Mr Wilson said.

Clean Up Australia chairman and founder Ian Kiernan said this year organisers would hold a series of clean up events to encourage schools, businesses and communities to get involved.

'Our vision is to involve every child in Queensland in the historic 20th anniversary by having them participate in Schools Clean Up Day on March 5,' Mr Kiernan said.

A concept that started 20 years ago, Clean Up Australia Day is now an international success story with communities worldwide cleaning up, fixing up and conserving the environment.

A resource for teachers, theSchools Climate Kit contains curriculum-based lesson plans across 16 environmental education areas.
