Gold Coast schools go for gold

Playing the game ... Parliamentary Secretary for the Games bid Peta-Kaye Croft with Labrador State School Years 5 and 7 students and principal Brian Ragh.

Seventy-five Gold Coast schools are adopting a Commonwealth country in support of the Coast’s 2018 Commonwealth Games bid.

The participating schools are to study their adopted country’s customs, language and culture throughout the year and will have the opportunity to meet the international delegates when they visit Gold Coast City later in the year.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Games bid and Member for Broadwater Peta-Kaye Croft said she was thrilled with the fact that more than 70 schools had taken up the opportunity to be a part of the program.

'We have a great range of schools participating from Springbrook State School which has only 34 students, to All Saints Anglican School with more than 1700 students,' Ms Croft said.

'This will be a memorable experience for our next generation of Queenslanders'.

'Students who participate in the program will learn about the rich diversity of countries that make up the Commonwealth, the history of the Games and make a significant contribution to this historic bid.'

The list of participating schools and their adopted countries is available on the Gold Coast 2018 website.
