Law Week activities set to educate

Teachers and students are invited to discover all things law from May 16-21 as courthouses around the state host a number of activities aimed at helping to educate young Queenslanders.

Mock trials will be performed by leading Queensland university students at the Brisbane Magistrates Court Open Day on May 21 and will use fairytale characters to help play out serious court proceedings.

The Queensland Studies Authority recommends Legal Studies students participate in mock trials as a learning experience. By participating in a mock trial students gain confident skills in speaking publicly and responding spontaneously. Check out the Law Week website for steps on how to run a mock trial in the classroom.

Courthouse tours are another way students of all ages can learn more about the legal system in Queensland. All courthouses throughout Queensland offer tours.

Law Week 2011 aims to build awareness and promotion of the law, the legal system and the
legal profession in Queensland by adopting the national theme of Law and justice in your community.

For more information on how to run a mock trial, book a tour, find a full list of statewide activities, including the Brisbane Magistrates Court Open Day program, visit the Law Week website.
