Remote Indigenous schools conference

2 June 2011

Professional issues relating to working in remote schools with significant Indigenous enrolment will be addressed at a national conference for school leaders in Brisbane in June.

The National Alliance for Remote Indigenous Schools (NARIS) conference will allow delegates to leverage their connections and advocate for improved conditions and benefits for teachers and principals in remote Indigenous schools.

The alliance is being led by the Queensland and the Northern Territory Departments of Education and Training and includes New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia. The conference will be held in Brisbane on June 20-21.

Best practice in areas of human resource management will be explored as well as professional issues related to working in schools with a high percentage of Indigenous students.

Principals and school administrators from remote Indigenous schools and schools with a significant Indigenous enrolment have been invited to the conference.

Department of Education and Training Assistant Director-General, Division of Indigenous Education and Training Futures, Ian Mackie, said educators and policymakers with an interest in improving conditions and incentives for teachers at remote Indigenous schools should attend.
