Go beyond the hour for Earth Hour 2011
23 March 2011

Smart science ... Boronia Heights State School students get earthy before Earth Hour.
Earth Smart Science School Boronia Heights already embodies the theme of this year's Earth Hour, Go Beyond the Hour.
Year 6-7 teacher and School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) team coordinator Lisa Maloney leads several initiatives and activities to help students continue their efforts against climate change.
These include forming a Senior Eco Team of Year 7 students who want to make positive changes to the environment, and publishing an in-house eco events magazine.
The school has also elected student 'Power Rangers' in each class who play a key role in raising awareness about energy conservation in the school community.
'The Power Rangers are responsible for reminding their classmates and teachers to switch off projectors, fans, lights and other electrical appliances when they're not needed,' Ms Maloney said.
'Our Senior Eco Team will be in charge of Earth Hour preparations this year.
'Last year, the junior students made peace lanterns in the lead-up to Earth Hour and we are hoping to do that again this year. We are also planning to create an Earth Hour display made from recycled materials.'
Earth Hour takes place at 8.30pm on Saturday 26 March. Households, communities, businesses and governments around the world will switch off their lights and other electrical appliances for an hour or longer in a collective effort against climate change.
The event, which started in Sydney in 2007, has since grown to become a global movement with individuals from 128 countries and territories supporting the cause in 2010. Amongst the event's supporters last year were more than 200 schools and Department of Education and Training workplaces.
The department has invited Queensland state schools to switch off non-essential lights and electrical appliances during an allocated period on Friday March 25.
