23 March 2011

Thirteen high-achieving Queensland students have received their 2011 TJ Ryan scholarships at a ceremony at Parliament House.
The university study scholarships, worth between $1000 and $10,000, were presented by Education Minister Cameron Dick to students who graduated in 2010. Recipients were recognised for exceptional leadership in their school and community and academic excellence through their achievements in Year 12..
Thomas Joseph Ryan was one of Queensland's most distinguished statesmen, Premier in Queensland's first majority ALP Government after the 1915 election and a former teacher with degrees in Arts and Law.
'He was a staunch advocate and defender of the rights of working Queenslanders, and was one of the key opponents of conscription during the First World War,' Mr Dick said.
'I am sure these students are proud to receive such a prestigious award.'
The six TJ Ryan medallists a $2000 scholarship payment for each year they completed of a degree course, to a maximum of five years.
A further seven highly commended students receive $1000 to assist with their tertiary studies.
