Teams race to promote Ekka

Ready to race ... The 2010 Chinchilla State High School Ekka film crew

In a real-world assignment for teachers and students alike, student film buffs will be rushing madly around the RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane to create an ad for the Ekka.

The Energex Race Around Ekka involves students from Years 8 to 12 working in small teams to plan, script, perform in, direct, shoot and edit a 15, 30 or 60 second ad aimed at one of Ekka's largest target markets, the 'twixters'.

Designed to demystify the filmmaking process, the high speed 48-hour competition requires students to spend one day at Ekka filming on site, and then 24 hours editing their work before submitting it for judging.

The competition provides an opportunity for teachers to integrate classroom teaching into real-life practice, supporting a range of skill sets central to dealing with life beyond school.

Marsden State High School teacher Amanda Richardson said the RNA facilitates a great opportunity for schools.

'I would love to do this as a unit of work and bring a whole class along,' Ms Richardson said.

During the filming process, students have exposure to the mentorship of film industry professionals and learn about film techniques, marketing and communications, teamwork, time management and creativity.

Prizes of $2500, $1500 and $1000 are awarded and winning entries will be played on the big screen in the Energex Community Arena during the evening program of the last Saturday of the Ekka. The winners will also have the opportunity to spend a day with Channel Nine Television Commercial Production Department learning how an ad is pulled together.

Entries will also be posted on the Ekka YouTube website and will compete for a People's Choice prize. The 2010 winners can be views on the Ekka website.

To download an information pack visit the Ekka website Learning Fun page, where last year's winners can be viewed. Entries close on July 15.
