Queensland's best state education programs were celebrated in style at the Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools gala dinner at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Bank.

More than 760 guests in the 'black and white with a splash of pink' dress theme cheered, ate and danced their way through a spectacular night of awards presentations and entertainment provided by students from the 2011 Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage performing arts showpiece.

Apart from each Showcase State Award winner taking home a $20,000 development grant, highlights of the night included special presentations to eight schools - Brassall, Grantham, Milton, Patrick Estate, Rocklea and Tully state schools and Milpera State High School - honouring their community leadership during the natural disasters earlier this year.

Special presentations were also made to Steve Ryan and John Battams from the Queensland Teachers' Union and Ken Smith, a previous director-general of the Department of Education and Training, for their outstanding contributions to Queensland education.

The night provided the perfect opportunity to reflect on the excellence of Queensland's state schools with the following schools being named state award winners:

  • The Network Ten Showcase Award for Excellence in the Early Phase of Learning: Bald Hills State School
  • The Commonwealth Bank of Australia Showcase Award for Excellence in the Middle Phase of Learning: Gin Gin State High School
  • The Showcase Award for Excellence in the Senior Phase of Learning: Brisbane School of Distance Education
  • The Showcase Award for Excellence in Inclusive Education: Centenary Heights State High School
  • The Queensland University of Technology Showcase Award for Excellence in Leadership: Goodna State School
  • The RemServ Showcase Award for Excellence in Innovation: Bulimba State School
  • The QSuper Showcase Award for Academic Excellence: Cairns West State School
