During National Nutrition Week 2011 (October 16-22), Camp Hill State Infants and Primary School became the first school in Brisbane to receive one of Food Smart Schools' prestigious Gold Menu Awards for excellence in tuckshop menus.

The Gold Menu Award recognises and rewards schools that have created nutritious menus that not only meet the requirements of The Smart Choices - Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy for Queensland Schools, but go even further to improve the quality of food and drinks for students and staff.

'We have a dedicated tuckshop committee who plan the menu and develop recipes using suggestions and feedback from staff, students and parents,' said principal Debbie Driver.

'We now purchase very little prepared food for sale in the tuckshop. Convenor Lois Mackie works with volunteers who come every day to cook and bake fresh food using our tuckshop facilities.'

Education Minister Cameron Dick visited the school during Nutrition Week to help promote Tuckshop Day with leading Queensland chef David Pugh, who was named as the state's Tuckshop Champion.

The inaugural Tuckshop Day on Friday November 4 will be the start of annual celebrations aimed at highlighting the tireless efforts of tuckshop workers who provide healthy food and drinks in schools every day.

More than 20,000 people provide a vital service to Queensland schools by regularly volunteering, but more are always welcome. Tuckshop Day is an ideal opportunity to encourage wider participation in schools by family members and the local community.

Grandparents and other family members, as well as members of the public, are welcome to donate whatever time they have to their local school.

School volunteers other than parents are required to have a Working with Children Blue Card which takes up to eight weeks to process.
