Day celebrates teachers worldwide
October 26 2011
Thousands of Queensland teachers will have service milestones recognised on Friday (October 28) as schools and the wider community celebrate the contributions of all teachers.
World Teachers' Day, an October 5 global event acknowledging and thanking teachers, is marked in Queensland on the last Friday in October to avoid a clash with school holidays.
Worldwide it has been celebrated in more than 100 countries since the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) established the day in 1994 to celebrate the role of teachers in society.
Five, 10 and 20-year service milestones will be acknowledged across Queensland with the presentation of commemorative pins to 6600 teachers.
More information on World Teachers' Day is available from the Department of Education and Training Make a difference Teach and the Queensland College of Teachers websites.
