With Mt Surprise State School principal Brigitte Mackenzie.

Mt Surprise State School

Mt Surprise State School.

Where is it?
Mount Surprise State School is approximately two and a half hours west of Atherton on the Savannah Way in Far North Queensland. We're part of the Tablelands-Johnstone education district.

When did it open?
1917.

How did it get its name?
Story has it two early settlers met a group of Aboriginal people and...surprise!

How many students?
We have 13 students from Prep to Year 7.

How many staff?
Six.

How long have you been the principal of Mount Surprise SS?
Eighteen months.

Best thing about your school?
The best thing about working in a small, rural, semi remote centre is the genuineness of the people, strong family ties and the community spirit.

Being a small school we provide lots of individual support, can be flexible in our program delivery, work with our other cluster schools and benefit from funding that supports students in accessing regional programs.

Claim to fame?
Our school plays a significant role in the community. Last year we celebrated the town's centenary.

School motto?
Aim high!
