SMART CLASSROOMS: Managing internet connection speeds

October 2009

Queensland state schools are taking to digital ways of teaching and learning at an unprecedented rate, with the Department of Education and Training now one of the biggest users of the internet in Queensland.

In the 12 months to July 2009, there was a 20 per cent increase in internet use within the department, representing a sharp jump in the number of staff and students using the web.

In August 2009, our staff and students downloaded the equivalent of 13.4 terabytes of information. This is equivalent to 16.3 million Word documents, 9.7 million photos or 3100 DVDs.

All of this increased activity is putting pressure on internet connection speeds in our schools and corporate offices.

To find out how you can help improve connection speeds, read the advice on the department's Managed Internet Service site.
