Annual Report 2005-2006

Annual Report 2005-06: Summary

This has been a year of achievement for the Department of Education and the Arts as we worked towards a Creative and Clever Queensland. Highlights for 2005-06 include:

finalising preparations for the introduction of the Prep Year in 2007 (see page 42)
completing the three year trial of the Senior Phase of Learning (see page 44)
managing the final stages of development for the new Gallery of Modern Art and major refurbishment of the State Library (see page 31)
developing the Bounds for Success strategy (see page 58)
the quick response to recover schools in far north Queensland following the damage of Cyclone Larry (see page 65).

Other key achievements for 2005-06 include:

ending the 2005-06 financial year in a sound financial position, with an operating surplus of $10.7 million for the entity (see pages 24 and 137)
continuing to match growth in teacher numbers with growth in enrolments (see page 23)
delivering a record (adjusted) Capital Works Program of $430.9 million and $117.3 million for the maintenance of school facilities (see page 101).
