New academies for best and brightest

Download a PDF version of this story (new window) 178k Adobe PDF document

Two academies of excellence for the state's best and brightest students in Years 10, 11 and 12 are set to open in 2007.

A maths, science and technology academy with close links to The University of Queensland is being built at Toowong, while a creative industries academy that links with Queensland University of Technology will be located
at Kelvin Grove.

Both academies plan to provide accelerated academic programs via the highly regarded International Baccalaureate Diploma program that is recognised by universities worldwide.

At universities around the world, students receive credit for subjects studied in the International Baccalaureate Diploma program and therefore reduce the time required to complete a Bachelor degree.

There will also be opportunities for students to gain valuable work experience in current and emerging industries, and combine their schooling with tertiary studies.

Enrolment in both academies will be competitive and will be conducted via a selective entry process, with a maximum enrolment of up to 450 students at each academy.
