Parents schooled on Year 12 achievements

Knowing more about the schools in your area just got easier, with the inaugural publication of the results of all Year 12 students in Queensland.

Compiled from the achievements of last year's graduates from state and non-state schools, the publication is part of historic Government reforms to the way schools report to parents and the wider community about their achievements and the outcomes of their students.

Queensland Council of Parents and Citizens' Associations State President, Wanda Lambert, says the new information will help parents make informed choices, but warns against using it to rank schools based only on high OP outcomes.

"Parents should also consider other important characteristics of a school its values, pastoral care, well-rounded education, curriculum, and special pathways into further study, apprenticeships or work when choosing a school."

The 17-column table that makes up the Year 12 outcomes report is available on the Queensland Studies Authority website and was published in The Courier-Mail and regional newspapers in April.

The information about schools includes:

Assistant Director-General, Department of Education and the Arts, Zea Johnston, says the data is of immense value to parents, particularly in combination with other information now available on schools' websites.

"It provides parents and the wider community with a snapshot of senior schooling in Queensland and provides a broad overview of the diverse study options offered by secondary schools and the outcomes their Year 12 students are achieving," she says.
