Students wanting a career in the health sector will get a head start at the Queensland Academy for Health Sciences (QAHS) which opened on the Gold Coast in Term one this year.

Future doctors, dentists, physiotherapists and optometrists are among the Year 10 and 11 inaugural students at the Academy, which will be expanded to include Year 12 students in 2009.

The QAHS is a partnership between Education Queensland and Griffith University, which is recognised for excellence in biomedical, clinical and healthcare research.

It prepares students for careers in medicine, public health, education and medical research by offering a curriculum that focuses on health sciences and additional subjects across humanities, social science and science.

The Academy provides world-class facilities including seven science laboratories, a 500-seat lecture theatre, a gym and a multi-media suite, as well as campus-wide wireless internet access.

The QAHS is the third academy to open in Queensland (the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology at Toowong, and the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries at Kelvin Grove opened in 2007) offering fast-track options for future tertiary studies.
