Preparing for QCAR

On May 25 2007, a state-wide QCAR contact seminar was conducted to provide the most recent information relating to the elements of the QCAR framework and how schools can prepare for QCAR implementation. The key presentations were captured on vodcast and are now available to the wider school communities for your information.

Ms Yvana Jones, Deputy Director (QCAR Branch, Queensland Studies Authority) provided information on the key messages and key elements of the QCAR Framework. Part 1 of her presentation describes the "why and what" of QCAR, presents an overview of key elements of the framework, and describes the Essential Learnings and Standards.

In Part 2, Yvana continues to describe the elements of the framework including the Assessment Bank, Assessment Tasks and making judgements of student achievement.

Ms Lesley Englert Assistant Director-General (Curriculum) provided the Education Queensland perspective on the background, influences and purpose of QCAR Framework. Her presentation has been separated into various sections to enable easier access to the information. An overview of the whole presentation is provided along with her view of the purpose and reasons for QCAR.

The other sections cover topics including the curriculum concerns that led to QCAR, the main findings of the QSRLS, research findings regarding classroom practices that informed the QCAR Framework, Building an assessment culture, reporting practices, and the national influences on QCAR.

Dr Thelma Perso, Executive Director (Curriculum) emphasised the importance of alignment of the key elements of curriculum intent, pedagogy, assessment and reporting and provided some suggestions on what schools can do in preparing for QCAR.

The final presentation addressed questions from the audience which were answered by the presenters.
