When do we manage risks?

Managers already manage risks in their operations, usually in an informal way.

The Department has created a risk management process that can be integrated into a manager's existing activities (e.g. processes, policies, procedures).

This effective risk management process should be applied to all levels of the organisation in all areas, such as:

How should the risk management process be applied?

The risk management process should be applied in three main areas:

  1. All business strategies, activities and management systems. This includes incorporating the processes into:
    • strategic, business and operational planning (strategic plans, capital plans and workforce plans)
    • policy development
    • project management
    • performance management
    • research and development.
  2. Compliance and control
  3. Incident management.

Examples of when to use the risk management process

Example 1

At a school you can conveniently complete your Risk Report while making up the Workplace Health and Safety report which forms part of your school's Annual Operating Plan.

Example 2

Update your business unit's Risk register template new window 2.6M Zipped data archive (ZIP file) at least twice a year or whenever things change, as part of your business planning process.

Example 3

Compile Risk Reports biannually, and forward after approval, by the appropriate officer in charge to Risk Management Services as part of the departments risk reporting process.
