Amaroo Environmental Education Centre, is located at Kleinton School Road, Kleinton, at the former Kleinton State School, approximately 25 km north from the centre of Toowoomba.
What does the Amaroo Environmental Education Centre provide?
Amaroo caters for preschool, primary, secondary and special schools offering single-day and overnight camp programs.
A number of local sites are accessed which offer the ability to investigate the freshwater stream environment and water storage facility of a dam, dry forest habitat, temperate rainforest and exotic pine plantation.
Thematic programs have been developed for primary and preschools. A few examples of some titles are: A Camping We Will Go, The Bunyip Hunt, Scooby Dooby Cooby Dam, A Tale of Two Forests, What a Waste, and Energy Efficiency.
At present secondary and special school programs are negotiated on an individual basis.
Centre programs integrate with the Key Learning Areas and support the class program of visiting schools. Prior to a visit, an Amaroo staff member visits the school to discuss program and planning arrangements with visiting teachers. Programs can be tailored or developed to specifically meet the needs of the visiting class.
Online student activities are available from the centre website.
Advice can be provided to schools who wish to develop their schoolgrounds or local area for environmental projects.
Amaroo is also the regional coordinator for 'Special Forever', an environmental communications project initiated by the Murray - Darling Basin Commission and managed by the Primary English Teaching Association.
