Purpose

The department provides assistance to eligible Queensland parents whose children must board away from home to attend school on a daily basis because:

Expenditure guidelines

Entitlements are calculated and paid in accordance with legislation and guidelines covering the Living Away from Home Allowances Scheme (LAFHAS). The scheme has four component allowances:

Eligibility

All payments are dependent on applicants' homes meeting distance eligibility criteria or being approved under special circumstances by the Minister for Education, Training and Employment.

Payment is also dependent on school attendance certifications and distance checking which is undertaken on a risk management basis.

Form of assistance

Allowances are paid by electronic funds transfer (EFT) as follows:

Living Away from Home Allowances Scheme Rates 2014

Remote Area Tuition Allowance - benefits equivalent to total tuition fees charged by schools

Students in Years 1-7 up to $1545 per annum
Students in Years 8-12 up to $2225 per annum

Remote Area Tuition Allowance - additional benefits of 50c for each $1.00 of tuition fee charged in excess of benefits equivalent to total tuition fees charged by schools, up to a maximum total allowance
