The Department of Education and Training recognises the need to assist parents of children who, because of the geographic isolation of their homes, find it necessary to board away from home to attend school on a daily basis. The Living Away from Home Allowance Scheme (LAFHAS) provides financial assistance to eligible Queensland families to assist with costs associated with educating students from rural and remote locations.

Entitlements are calculated and paid in accordance with legislation and guidelines covering the Living Away from Home Allowances Scheme (LAFHAS). The scheme has four component allowances:
All payments are dependent on applicants' homes meeting distance eligibility criteria or being approved under special circumstances by the Minister for Education. Payment is also dependent on school attendance certifications and distance checking which is undertaken on a risk management basis.
Allowances are paid by electronic funds transfer (EFT) as follows:
