Learn to Swim

Purpose

To assist schools with the provision of Learn-to-Swim programs.

Eligibility

State primary and special schools without a swimming pool.

Allocation of Funds

In determining each school's entitlement, the following principles apply:

Travel assistance

Travel assistance is paid where the nearest available swimming pool is more than 1.0 km from the school. The amount of assistance is based on an assumed 10 return trips per year at defined kilometric rates and provides for bus driver waiting time, where:

Admission assistance

Admission assistance is set at a pool admission rate per student per visit based on the assumption that there are 10 visits per year.

Primary schools

Travel assistance = 0

Admission assistance = 2/7 x enrolment x pool admission rate x 10.

Enrolments fewer than 25

Travel assistance = waiting time + (km rate 1 x distance to pool x 2 x 10)

Admission assistance = 2/7 x enrolment x pool admission rate x 10.


Enrolments greater than or equal to 25

Travel assistance = number of buses x [waiting time rate + (km rate 2 x distance to pool x 2 x 10)]

Admission assistance = 2/7 x enrolment x pool admission rate x 10.

Special schools

Travel Assistance = 0

Admission Assistance = Enrolment Pool admission rate 10.

Enrolments fewer than 25

Travel Assistance = Waiting time + (km rate 1 x distance to pool x 2 x 10)

Admission Assistance = Enrolment x Pool admission rate x 10.


Enrolments greater than or equal to 25

Travel Assistance = Number of Buses x [Waiting Time Rate + (km rate 2 x distance to pool x 2 x 10)]

Admission Assistance = Enrolment x Pool admission rate x 10.

Current rates

Pool admission rate: 50c

Bus driver waiting time: $320

Number of buses: 1 bus per 50 students or part thereof

km rate 1 - funded enrolment <25: 54c

km rate 2 - funded enrolment >25: 67.5c

Distance to pool: to a maximum of 80 km

Number of trips: 10.

Schools do not need to apply for this funding. Entitlements are automatically calculated each year by Finance Branch and paid to schools.
