To assist schools with the costs of wages for personnel engaged in the role of individual travel support for eligible students with disabilities' travel between home and school at the start and end of the student's school day.
All Queensland state schools with eligible students approved for individual travel support may receive funding. Student eligibility for transport assistance is assessed by school transport assessors and approved by the Principal Advisor, Education Services, or Principal Education Officer, Student Services in each region as per the School Transport Assistance Programs for Students with Disabilities procedure. Some eligible students are assessed with high supervision needs during travel for a safety or medical reason. This supervision is provided by individual travel support personnel.
Approval of the student's transport assistance with individual travel support authorises the school to engage a suitable person (as defined in the policy) in this role. Where required, a suitable person may be employed.
Schools should refer to page 6 in the Transport Assessor Supporting Information (DETE employees only) on who is eligible for fares and wages.
Individual travel support personnel are generally existing school teacher aides or employed as a teacher aide to act in the individual travel support role for a specified student.
Funding is based on actual wages incurred.
Schools pay individual travel support personnel through the fortnightly Schedule for Casual Teacher Aide Payments and claim from Safety and School Transport, Regional Operations, Infrastructure Services Branch, on a monthly basis in the school year the support was provided.
