Refugee Program

Purpose

Refugee Program funding provides support to schools with refugee students, especially those with very complex learning, social and psychological needs.

Eligibility

Schools with refugee students may receive funds depending upon the regional distribution process.

Form of assistance

Formula-generated allocations - notional allocations to regions and subsequent region-advised grant disbursements to schools (including Independent Public Schools).

Semester 1. February or when requested by Regional Offices. As determined by Regional Offices.
Semester 2. Semester 2 July or when requested by Regional Offices. As determined by Regional Offices.

Allocation of funds

Regions are allocated funds based on the number of "weighted" refugees per Region to fit within a fixed budget allocation. The weightings are calculated on the number of refugees classified as being either "New Arrivals"; "1st year (not new arrivals)"; "2nd year" and "3rd year".

Regions distribute these funds to schools based on identified need.

Relevant student data. ESL database maintained by Performance Reporting and Monitoring on advice from schools. Form is submitted on enrolment or transfer of eligible student or on cessation of support for the student.
